To me it sounds exactly right when oberving thought. It’s like when people often first think of the worst possible scenario in a given situation, that’s the mind just looking out for you

The mind is memory/thought

The ego is one fragment of that accumulated memory that responds as thought. 

Yet that ego sees itself as an entity that stands outside (independent) from the bundle of memory’s/thoughts in which “it” possesses, controls, utilizes for “its” agenda.
