Is learning philosophy of religion worth it?

11 posts in this topic

All I see in this book are arguments about the existence / non-existence of God. Triggered my belief system, funny hahaha!

A bit of useful knowledge about epistemics and religious experience.

Feels too much like mental masturbation. I chose this subject in uni, thinking it'd be different.

I think so.  It exposes you to certain things that you might never have been exposed to.  I have a degree in Philosophy and took a couple of classes in philosophy of religion and one in Buddhism.  The Buddhism class was almost worthless except for the textbooks which I read like 10 years after I graduated.

@Joseph Maynor But dude, who gives a fucking shit about ontological/cosmological arguments. Like what the fuck bro who fucking cares. Change my view please. I feel like I'm wasting my time doing useless study.

it's not a philosophy of religion. It's debating existence of God.

@Gligorije Follow your heart. Without attachment or judgement. But be smart tho in your analysis.

As long as you're sincere, you'll be fine.

You've got nothing to lose either~

Were you able to take a philosophy of mind class?

If you really wanted to get into real philosophy of religion, study Medieval Western Philosophy.  Theology is the other area you might want to look at.

Oh yeah.  I took the intro course and the upper division course.  Those are the classes where I was exposed to questions like “What is pain?”  Those are important classes if you have a good teacher.

It’s worth it if you are interested in it:D

it depends on why you are doing it. Why are you interested? Is this interest involved with reward(fulfilling a certain potential)?

I would say it depends on the intention if it is worth it or not.
