It's largely about an empire trying to regain it's glory. Putin has tremendous power over Russia and has dismantled all the checks and opposing forces in the country over the years. Putin believes he needs to reestablish Russia as a force to be reckon with and take back land that was part of Russia during the Russian Empire. There are of course seeds of resentment over how the Soviet Union collapsed and lost the cold war to the USA, equally so fears of being invaded dating back to WWII. But the safety concerns are largely a sort of "cover" to justify the real reason which is Make Russia Great Again. Russia has nukes. Ukraine is a weak country and there was no reason for Europe to attack Russia again. They had been entangling their economies for a quarter century. Putin got a bunch of crazy ideas while he was quarantined during COVID. He bought his own hype thinking he could pull a Cuba on Ukraine in a couple days with a woefully small amount of soldiers and now here we are today. He basically started it and the momentum he created has made it so that he has to keep going forward. Nothing here comes from long term planning. Every choice he has made has just been to try and put out a fire here, a fire there. Hence why it's so sloppy and why he can't back out of it. And of course the majority Russians are super conformist and will back whatever Putin does. Russia had an opportunity to become a sort of quasi authoritarian market country with more power spread amongst oligarchs and middle class. With that would of come more protests, less conformity, more demands for freedom and speech and whatnot. I think Putin has grown to fear that as well and the war has also come with the benefit of stamping out any sort of political dissent. So got relief from all the protests during COVID as well. It's a perfect storm really. No on knows how it will end.

The armies of Napoleon and Hitler used Ukraine as the neighboring base to attack Russia. Over 25 million Russians and Ukrainian Slavs died during the Nazi onslaught of eastern europe, as nazi racial doctrine considered the eastern europeans as racially inferior, similar to the gypsies and jews.

The incredible counter-attack waged by the russians in stanlingrad however ended the nazi genocidal plans as well as war machine, and ensured the survival of the Slavs, Jews and gypsies later on.

The russian counter-attacks ended permanently  the Napoleonic and Nazi regimes, which were the most powerful militaries on earth in those times. However they sustained heavy damage during the invasions especially the nazi one.

This is one of the reasons why the Russians are paranoid about hostile military alliances on their very borders. Hungary does not border russia.

The russians are not hostile to these countries including ukraine joining EU, as it is an economic alliance, and the russians are also open to joining EU as Russia is a white european christian nation itself .

The russians themselves were open to joining Nato many times, though this was rejected by the western leadership even under the times of Yeltsin, who was a staunch western ally back then.

Imo, the only reason the western leadership rejected Russian membership in nato could be due to lack of a bogeyman or perceived external threat back then to raise fears against, that would justify high defense budgets  and the existence of Nato itself at the expense of western taxpayer money.

The entire point of NATO is to defend against Russia.

This is like asking why the superhero squad doesn't allow a villain to join.

Quote

"As for Ukraine's membership of the EU, we have never objected to this," Putin said while visiting China. "As for NATO, this is another issue."

Putin maintains that while the EU is an economic bloc which countries have a sovereign right to join, NATO expansion into the post-Soviet space is a direct security threat to Russia that Moscow strongly opposes.

Putin had himself suggested in the 2000s of Russia joining the EU as a western country itself.

Russia allowed Hitler and napoleon to have bases in -Russia? It was a part of Russia during napoleon, a part of ussr during Hitler.....

Nope

A neutral Ukraine can just as easily allow Europe to March to Russia border, in about 2 hours.

Are you Iranian?

I'm not Iranian. I Am Persian.

Iran is a fake name The British installed on my country.

Iran or Ariana was the name of a big area in today's Afghanistan and Tajikistan in The Great Land of Persia before it was ripped apart.

Iran was only part of our land not the whole of it but the British Globalists have mixed it all up for their own benefits.

We are in a war to reclaim and revive our true identity as Persians and defeat the Globalists.

Persian is a collection of ethnic groups and a culture. Iran is a nation-state.

Persia is not a state.

No it's not that's just the globalist narrative in the main stream media today.

It's all made up.

We were always Persia.

Actually this is the one that is backwards.

They robbed us of our true identity.

Afghanistan and Tajikistan and a lot of the new made up countries were actually all parts of Persia in history.

Have no idea what you are talking here ! Russia did not allow Napoleon or Hitler to have bases in russia and defeated their invasions back then.

Why should a neutral Ukraine allow Nato to march to russian borders ! It would be infringement of ukrainian sovereignty and needlessly would subject Ukraine to a possible conventional and nuclear attack !

There never was a single Persian identity. It is was a chaotic mess of various peoples from around the region.

You say "true identity" but others in the region would disagree that your identity is there identity.

Feel free to ask Afghans or Tajiks if they think they are Persian or not.

That will give you a good clue.

• The Indigenous Name (Iran): Internally, the ancient Iranians and the Achaemenid kings used terms derived from Airyan (land of the Aryans) to refer to their people and collective identity.

• The Greek Name (Persia): The name Persia is a Western exonym (a name given by outsiders). It comes from the ancient Greeks, who named the entire empire after Pars (or Persis), the specific home region of Cyrus the Great and the ruling Achaemenid dynasty.

That proves my point. Persian is a loose ethnic cultural identity, similar to Slavic. Slavic is not a nation-state.

I know this is the main stream media made up narrative that I was talking about.

It was all made up about 90 years ago when Reza Shah renamed this country to Iran.

And it was all made up by the British.
