I suspect that it doesn't work for the majority of people.

But one of my closest female friends and her husband are poly. And they've been together for 18 years and going strong. 

And over the years, they've either had a sexually-open relationship... or had other male and female partners. 

And I honestly can't imagine her being able to operate in a monogamous marriage without losing core elements of who she is as a person. And if she were with a monogamously-oriented guy, the relationship wouldn't have worked out.

So, I do think that polyamory is necessary for some people who aren't suited towards monogamous marriage. And I think truly mutual polyamory between two poly-oriented people can work quite well.

But it's always a little more unwieldy compared to monogamous relationships, as there are more moving parts. But I do think it suits people who are all genuinely suited to polyamory.

Conversely, one of the things that I've seen happen is when there's a woman who really likes a guy that she's with, and he wants to open up the relationship and start dating multiple women. So, she tolerates it and tries to be poly with him. And that's always sad.

And the guy isn't even usually suited to polyamory himself. He may just have a fantasy of being with multiple women sexually, without the desire to form a genuine intimate connection with multiple people.

So, I think this one-sided polyamory will always fail.

And for monogamously-oriented men with sexual fantasies about multiple sexual partners, but who aren't actually poly... those relationships will fail too.

It's a joke more than a fantasy

I like bisexual women, I find lesbians philosophically interesting but not my particular cup of tea. I hear some lesbian couples like to fuck men as like a sex toy type of experience so I mean I could be persuaded if the argument was persuasive enough. 

Keep in mind though lesbian relationships have the highest rate of divorce ahead of gay men and heterosexual relationships. 

I think overall statistics shouldn't apply to you if you're a developed individual willing to work on your flaws. The average person is so averse to development that you can beat statistical odds at least 3 times over very easily.

Feudal polygyny is perhaps what you mean in terms of women having few rights and economic opportunities.

Developed nations are against polyamory mainly because of inheritance laws and social structures that threaten the administrative nuclear family unit status quo.

Yeah well not according to @LordFall. There are women out there willing to have multiple partners.  So if you have them on board..then you have a full deck because it is on a volunteer basis.
