Canadian Prime Minister On Rejecting US Trade Negotiations

21 posts in this topic

This video is of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney speaking on ending trade negotations with Trump and the unjust tariffs he is putting on Canada.

Notice how Mark Carney talsk talks, this is what intelligent, mature and competent leadership looks like. Notice how Trump is like a circus clown in comparison.

Also, notice how bad things are with Trump. Canadians have to stand strong and I think Mark Carney and the team of negotiators are doing the right thing. Negotiations in good faith from Canadian side. But, it’s clear we can not trust the US federal government to handle things in a grounded and mutual regard.

I would love know what the negotiations looked like. I think Carney is indeed a more astute individual than Trump but I think he has some ego and wants to look tough. I can't be sure if I'm right but I think he is bluffing a bit. It was my understanding that we need a renewed good version of the USMCA deal otherwise the Canadian economy is gonna dump.

@LordFall I suspect you are not well informed on this. Canada is very strong. We are trusted and have many trade partners. These tariffs are taxes on Americans and only hurt the value of America as a good trade partner to the world. These tariffs hurt Americans dearly. Does Trump care? No.

You should consider looking at Mark Carney’s resume. He isn’t tough. He is doing his job for all Canadians and even for the global economy. Very few humans hold a candle to Mark Carney.

Excuse me? You seem to have narrow unresearched opinions based on feelings more than facts on many topics. Check yourself before saying nonsense on a geopolitics thread xD

Extreme Export Asymmetry: Roughly 70% to 75% of all Canadian exports go directly to the United States. The U.S., by comparison, sends less than 18% of its total exports to Canada. Canada relies overwhelmingly on one customer for three-quarters of its export economy. That's called a key man risk.

Macro GDP Vulnerability: Total bilateral trade in goods and services between the two nations exceeds $870 billion USD. While cross-border supply chains like automotive and energy products are deeply integrated, a prolonged tariff war or USMCA breakdown hits Canada's $2.2T GDP proportionally far harder than America's $28T+ economy.

Partner Substitution Limits: Canada cannot simply "pivot" to other global trade partners short-term. Moving critical volume in crude petroleum, automobiles, or manufacturing components out of the North American corridor requires decades of infrastructure and transport pipeline development.

Your standard of living is going to be personally affected if this trade deal is not solved properly as well as mine and the other canadians on the forum. The Americans will not be affected much.

@LordFall Going forward when you insult me in your posts we are done speaking. I’m an intelligent man, and I’m also a Canadian who is following this closely. I’ll speak to you when you can be a mature man and speak to me with decency.

I want to focus on the subject, and not have to process emotionally why this person just called me stupid and emotionally reactive right out of the gate. This should be common practice on the form. We should think about what we say. I need to work on this too.

Grabbing things from AI, narrowing the scope of your badly worded prompt provides what looks like truth about the trade situation but it doesn’t. Don’t preach me to about your competence and my apparent incompetence when you just grab things from AI. The AI response of which is clearly sloppy.

I invite you to follow more closely the trade situation and come to your own conclusions. If you want to respectfully share views and opinions on this I’ll be willing to.

Sorry you seem to be too emotional to discuss this topic. Since you clearly are clueless on this topic and resort to feelings before reality I encourage you to educate yourself further on the current geopolitical climate before you embarrass yourself further.

Here is a good breakdown that explains how the Iran war is currently affecting American Foreign Policy.

I would also tell you that the US is currently considering pulling out of NATO. That would leave us completely fucked in terms of Russian and China intervention in our arctic if we don't come up with a solid deal with the US ASAP.

@LordFall Take care man. I’m gonna step away from responding to you. I don’t appreciate how you are approaching me. I feel calm, open to discussion. But, not interested in ego games.

No worries man.

You're the one that was condescending first btw so your moral outrage is not rooted in facts just in a hurt ego.

That's what happens when you use feelings over logic to approach serious topics.

I think Trump is right with these Tarrifs.

@LordFall Consider this,

Me thinking you are not well informed on a subject vs you calling me emotionally reactive and that I’m embarrassing myself.

My opinion that based on what you are saying you don’t understand a trade dispute. That is very different than me insulting your intelligences. Why do I think you aren’t informed? Because I listen to Mark who I trust and I listen to premieres and experts. When what you say differs from that I pushed back on your understanding, not your intellegence or value on the forum.

I am not mad, and can see how my wording may have been offensive. My apologies.

No worries. I don't think I am misinformed and I think you are misinformed. When I brought actual facts into it that are the real numbers that our country is facing you had no other rebuttal but to try to invalidate my point. Consider why that is.

A trade dispute is solved with numbers not feelings. Mark Carney not only has a geopolitical crisis to manage but he also has to appear strong domestically and I do honestly believe that is hurting his negotiation skills and that is why I called it ego in my first reply to this thread. I don't think that posturing is how you negotiate on a high level. It doesn't work in business in my experience and I assume it's not gonna work politically.

I understand that it is an anxiety inducing situation but you handwaved away my attempt at discussing it thoroughly by just saying Mark has a good resume he'll figure it out. Is that the mark of a responsible citizen and high quality intellectual?

I apologize for being harsh but I find it a common pattern with you to use emotions to discuss a topic over the actual facts. You did the same thing to me in the Islam thread. Standing up for our head of state without being able to discuss their short comings in a matter of fact way is an emotional reaction that helps nobody.

Let's discuss the hard numbers. Why do you think Canada is in a strong position to play hard ball against the United States in this negotiation?

It's just dumb to start a trade war with Canada.

That's what's called an own-goal.

@LordFall Frankly, the points you listed were AI generated and of limited scope, and it was biased towards Canada ending all trade relationships which will not happen.

@LordFall I think you are misrepresenting our discussions up to this point saying I’m responding with emotion instead of fact.

1. In our previous conversation I clearly provided the audiobook I was referencing. Have you bothered to check that out? And, the points about Islamic teachings speaking to the heart is something I personally found true. We disagreed on the character of Mohammad, whether or not he was a warlord. During this time I referred to the audiobook and some searches online. But, you continued to disagree and I acknowledged the differences. We then entered into a Socratic conversation but you have not responded. I even responded to some of your insults without insulting you back.

So, as for our recent conversation I think my actions suggest my attitude is respectful and informed. I even acknowledged the epistemic challenges we both share that knowing is rare even when using facts and history.

2. Our current conversation suggests we have come to a different understanding regarding Canada’s current economic position and its power in negotiations with with United States. I do not feel I need to explain to you my reasoning in great detail.

This said, I do not feel I’ve said anything that implies my feelings of Canada’s resilience is pure emotions. We can not know for sure what is to come. But, from my looking into it I’ve come to understand Canada has considerable power here long term as it remains a trade partner with the United States despite the relationship being ill. Canada continues to be a major player in global economic activity and will become a stronger nation through this. Canada is respected and trusted all around the world and also by all US businesses. Despite what Trump is doing. This is my opinion. I respect yours, without insulting you.
