What does INTP productivity look like?

20 posts in this topic

I'm curious about your takes in this forum, that would be helpful a lot.

Do you think INTPs lean more towards loose structure over rigid schedule, and they value solitude, curiosity, deep work over the more discipline like productivity? do you notice some distinctions about INTP productivity?...

I can’t answer from experience as I’m an INTJ, but I can answer based on what I know about INTPs. They have a reputation for being unproductive people living in their mom’s basement if their intelligence isn’t nurtured properly. When they are productive, it revolves around deep intellectual curiosity where Ti hero can apply itself to analytical understanding with the help of Ne parent. An INTP can probably answer better what it looks like for them though.

Jesus you didn't have to roast them like that lol. It's a harsh truth though.
Thanks for the comment

:D I'm an INTP, so true. Out of the 16 types, INTPs are the 3rd worst at making money .ISFP after and INFP dead last ranked by average income.

I've had to make business an intellectual endeavor and focus on the art and quest of knowledge part of it to find some success as opposed to types like ESTJs and ENTJ which are the top 2 highest average income due to lack of overthinking and high average industriousness I guess.

Obsidian and Leo's video on the common place book strategy have also completely changed my life. It's allowed me to super charge my intellectualism and keep track of my knowledge and ameliorate it each day instead of falling pray to useless vague intellectualism that INTPs usually fall into. Also thank God for pickup which grounded my heavily in the real world and the validation of women otherwise I would probably literally be a basement dweller myself

I would say I'm in the top 0.1% of most social INTPs because I tread my social life like a system and a science experiment as opposed to actually just socializing to recharge my energy which I don't enjoy doing.

I guess that's a very important idea. INTPs are mostly either intellectuals or creatives or both. That's what they find most engaging and interesting.

Yes the problem with business is it's not very interesting. You find a gap in the market and then you send mass outreach to clients and you fulfill services or build products and iterate. The insight idea happens only once and the rest is emotional labor. It takes massive amounts of originality to create a business that leads to you being able to think, contemplate and have insights daily like Leo did as opposed to just doing monogamous tedious tasks all day everyday.

Alex Becker recommends basically boiling down your life to 4 things, work, meditation, relationships and reading fiction. Funnily enough it's very similar to a spiritual ascetic lifestyle but you remove all the juice of life when you do this imo. I spend all day researching random topics, linking them together and working on my obsidian common place book. I only spend like 2 hours a day if that on the mechanical parts of my business.

If I switched the two allocations around I would be wildly more successful than I am now but I think my path will work too as I'm building a lot of leverage through systems thinking so we'll see how it turns out in 5 years .

It seems like INTPs are really attached to thinking.  They can also be playful with thoughts or words usually in my experience.

I've been using Joplin since my OneNote got lost somehow, but you inspired me to try Obsidian, curious to see what the differences are.

I'm an INTP, and have been mostly terrible at making any income in my life, despite good grades and being very close to finishing an engineering degree, so it seems my case adds to this framing.

I honestly think for INTP their intellectual pursuits - structure, inner contemplation/internal consistency, intellectual understanding, logic  - that IS their productivity. They are actively doing something and achieving something to that end. It just isn't apparent from the outside. And it probably (from outsiders view and society at large) doesn't count as a productive activity.

I miss things INTP's do not because I have a tendency to only take the information away that is useful and can be applied. I will immediately jump to how long something can take, what is the path and goal. Anything not relevant is discarded.

INTP excel in being university professor. INTPs are good only in coming up with new theory or model of something

We're gonna make it bro; somehow xD

I actually think INTPs are one of the best types to benefit from the AI revolution since we usually understand systems; it's just the repetitively labor that's the hard part. AI agents can take care of that while we build system of leverage. It's the guise I'm currently building my business around, seems promising.

Obsidian is great, what's so cool is you can link concepts together and create emergent ideas. For example you start from INTPs and productivity, then you go to MBTIs ranked by average income which I had already saved months ago. Then you go to big 5 personality and assess yourself on industriousness cuz that's what is gonna cuck your intellect. All the ideas are easy to research together and each new insight you have makes all your perspective just compound on itself which is why I seem to understand deep concepts better than most. It's not because I'm necessarily smarter but I have 45 000 thousand pages of notes on my Obsidian now and I create like 30-100 new ones daily.

This guy has really good videos on Obsidian and using it to foster insights. I don't really use his exact system I find it too convoluted but I learned a lot from his way of thinking.

@Ramanujan I've always hated that intellectual path. People that live in ideas are not very effective in the world. You use your ideas to build leverage to live in systems. University professors for the most part pretty ineffective people. Especially now that AI is gonna eat their lunch and can recap their lectures so being an action taker is more critical than ever.

@Natasha Tori Maru What about yourself, what's your type? Are you an INFJ by chance?

this is really insightful for me and made things click because I've switched careers 4 times and now work as a social media ghostwriter, which constantly requires research, insight, creativity... i didn't think before that the intellectual part is what's missing. until i tried ghostwriting. I always thought I'm not a writer or intellectual at all, and that I'm just someone who's curious about intellectual stuff.

Being a content creator or create content in general either for you or for someone else is great way to monetize that in my experience.

God damn, i did not think this thread would be this insightful. I contemplated on it a bit and those 2 are accurate ideas about INTPs, especially with the modeling and originality part.

Or course sellers on social media as well, especially ones that sell their own systems that they work with personally.

You're right I gotta give them props. I just mean for me personally it wouldn't produce the life I want to stay in an office for decades and eventually have a sick insight and 50 years after my death people finally get it. INTPs synthesize concepts much easier than other types so we usually can see the vision before it's possible as making it happen through the friction of the material world is a whole other issue.

Glad you resonated man. Content creation makes a lot of sense for an INTP(and anyone really) because it's not really a medium it's a tool that connects the whole human experience together in the most effective medium we've invented so far in history. It's truly fascinating and there are endless nuances you can lean from it and the ceiling is truly infinite.
