Sufi story

9 posts in this topic

There was a man who was enlightened, a Sufi master whom everyone respected deeply. Many people begged him to accept them as his students, but he refused them all. He had no disciples and showed no interest in teaching anyone.

One day, however, a man came who would not leave. Day after day, he stood at the master’s door, pleading to be accepted. When his requests were ignored, he slept outside the master’s house. He remained there for days, unmoving, unwavering. At last, the Sufi master opened the door and accepted him as a student.

On the very first day, the master said, “This is your duty: you will wear the dress of a seductive woman and walk through the entire town like this, all day long.”

The student was shocked and confused. He said, “Master, I thought we would pray, meditate, and practice dhikr.”

The master smiled and replied, “No. The path is not about prayer or meditation. The path is about destroying everything that makes you you.”

Begging with a bowl is more effective. It's already known in their practice. Combined with prayer and meditation it has potential to reduce you into nothingness.

It feels like some woke activists invented that story.

Yes. If you get rid of all your fears, a significant chunk, if not all, of you will deconstruct as well. Challenging your fears is spiritual

The idea is interesting, but it wouldn't work in practice. Their identity would then be that of a humiliated person being insulted, or as the student who is so brave to humilliate himself, or anything. The goal is for him to not care about his social identity, but that's not achieved by humiliating yourself, but by ceasing to lie, expressing your truth without filter.

And then he should let go his human identity, his identity as a form, and as center, also as consciousness

Enduring the naked raw groundlessness of being effortlessly. A burden beared without justification.
