How Would You Define Consciousness In Your Own Words?

73 posts in this topic

99% of you is unconscious. When you will become concious of that 99% you'll be more concious than others.

Then what parts of me are conscious and which are not?

I find it amazing that a word like consciousness exists. It's like a fish describing water. We pretend we all think we know what "consciousness" refers to. But it's a completely relative notion, not absolute.  I'd say that there are several different definitions floating around: the sensations of experiencing, the awareness of existence, the awareness that you as a person exists, and a more general "knowledge" of the world and how it works. All of which causes no end of confusion.

Perhaps there are or should be better words to describe what people mean when they use the words "conscious" or "consciousness"?

The parts of your life where you're concious of beauty, love and joy, peace are the concious parts of your life. You're aware of the truth.

The parts of your life where you're in attachment, anxiety, frustration, suffering, doubt etc. etc. those parts of your life are unconscious. You're lost in illusion.

You won’t get a single definition here because there are different ways of understanding spirituality.

There is being conscious, which refers to being aware (they’re synonyms), and consciousness can increase or decrease. A human is more conscious than a dog, which is more conscious than an ant. In spirituality, you try to become more conscious so that your experience of life goes beyond that of most humans.
The word Consciousness is more than just a creature’s perception, it is the fundamental nature of reality. It is called Consciousness because reality is not a physical system but an infinite, ever changing singularity.

I definitely agree there. But people are not conscious enough to find the right words (sorry I laugh at my own jokes). I don't know. There are plenty of synonyms: existence, awareness, self-awareness, knowledge, qualia, experience, God (on this forum), thought, inner dialogue, feelings and so on. But on a forum you're not going to get accurate language in general.

I'd also say in general it's not even possible to agree if my experience has any overlap with your experience at all. Because all agreement is done through language, so it's already once removed. It's quite possible we're not even talking about the same thing when we say "consciousness".

Interesting.   So in your paradigm, would you say a more conscious person accepts and focuses on things like beauty, love, joy, and peace while rejecting or ignoring anxiety, frustration, suffering and doubt?   Or would you explain it some other way?

Aware of what?

A human is more conscious than a dog, which is more conscious than an ant.

So a human is more aware than a dog and a dog more aware than an ant?

Are they really more aware or do you mean one is more intelligent than the other?

What do you mean when you say that your experience of life goes beyond that of most humans?

What doubles it up is when you can both laugh and understand at the same time!  But this is hard for 99.9 percent of people.

@Joseph Maynor let me tell you something, you are a very good guy or have a good soul so to speak, I can see in your face.

Believe me, when you stop just protecting yourself, goodness will explode within you.

Alternative explanation would be:

What's the point of psychotherapy? The point of it is to dive into your subconscious parts where you're stuck in destructive, dysfunctional patterns and to bring awareness to those parts so you could heal and become more concious as a result that. Transforming misery into wholeness. Unconsciousness into conciousness.

Actually not because of that, even in your YouTube videos, I felt that you are a very good guy. Only, mistake is you are so protectful for yourself, therefore inevatibly if someone attack you, you attack them back.

Let them attack, believe me, there is nothing to protect.
