How to generate start up ideas?

9 posts in this topic

I really wanna to start something big, but I don't have any tech skills. And today almost everything is about technologies. And in general how can you describe process of idea generation?

Use your imagination? turn off the devices, get bored until things start exploding in your mind. This is how it all begins, 2 - 4 am is the sweet spot, for me at least. Not sure why but things turn on to the max at these times, especially after sleeping on the forest floor for a few days.

Not a linear thing and not something that can be bought or shared that simply. Envisioning is what you're looking for, developing a vision for the future, which involves creativity and aspiration.

Tell me what field do you want to work on? Because technology is everywhere, you need to limit to your main objective. Anything from architecture, computers, medicine, biology, space exploration, art, etc.

Big picture first, then details.

One method:

What problem can you solve for someone?    What problems do you face that you wish you could pay someone for a solution?

Is there significant demand for this problem to be solved?

Is anyone else solving it well?

Is there a business opportunity here or not?

Another method:

What desire does a person or group of people have that you can satisfy for them?

Is there significant demand for this desire to be satisfied?

Is anyone else satisfying it well?

Is there a business opportunity here or not?

You need a lot of experience in whatever area you are trying to innovate in. This comes from being a deep consumer of the tech.

For example, if you want to innovate vibrators, you need a lot of experience using vibrators.

This blog post  How to Do Great Work by Paul Graham can be useful for you, as the author suggests that the way to innovate and create ambitiously exciting projects in any field is by following your genuine curiosity deeply enough to reach the “frontier” of a field, where knowledge is uneven and full of gaps, and those gaps are where new ideas and innovations come from.

Steps:
1. First choose what to work on:

Quote

There's a kind of excited curiosity that's both the engine and the rudder of great work. It will not only drive you, but if you let it have its way, will also show you what to work on.

What are you excessively curious about — curious to a degree that would bore most other people? That's what you're looking for.

2. Learn enough about it to get to the frontier of knowledge in this field:

Quote

Once you've found something you're excessively interested in, the next step is to learn enough about it to get you to one of the frontiers of knowledge. Knowledge expands fractally, and from a distance its edges look smooth, but once you learn enough to get close to one, they turn out to be full of gaps.

3. Notice the gaps:

Quote

The next step is to notice them. This takes some skill, because your brain wants to ignore such gaps in order to make a simpler model of the world. Many discoveries have come from asking questions about things that everyone else took for granted.

If the answers seem strange, so much the better. Great work often has a tincture of strangeness.

4. Explore the promising ones:

Quote

Boldly chase outlier ideas, even if other people aren't interested in them — in fact, especially if they aren't. If you're excited about some possibility that everyone else ignores, and you have enough expertise to say precisely what they're all overlooking, that's as good a bet as you'll find.

"Four steps: choose a field, learn enough to get to the frontier, notice gaps, explore promising ones. Steps two and four will require hard work. It may not be possible to prove that you have to work hard to do great things, but the empirical evidence is on the scale of the evidence for mortality. That's why it's essential to work on something you're deeply interested in. Interest will drive you to work harder than mere diligence ever could.

The three most powerful motives are curiosity, delight, and the desire to do something impressive. Sometimes they converge, and that combination is the most powerful of all. "

I quoted some main parts from the blog post for you to get its general idea, as it's long.

Wishing you the best of luck!

This is the plan. LET'S GOOOO! 🚀
