My holy trinity of strategy games is StarCraft II, Anno 2070, and Civilization V.

Exactly. Why has no one mentioned Civ 5 yet? Much more stimulating than most games.

Strategy games are not appealing to most people. Most people have supressed SD red so they gravitate towards such games. All games are a simulation of some kind. So it is a good way to act out.

It is time to become timeless

@Basman tell me this isn't art :P:P

I'm a real pain in the ass xD

By the way, do not read the comments if you plan on playing it. In fact, don't search for anything about it.

Looks pretty, but devoid of gameplay depth. I'd rather build a house myself than watch a cutscene of someone doing it.

The story isn't interesting enough to justify itself as a story game to me.

@UnbornTao I'm sure it's a good game. The issue is whether the prospect of playing it excites me. To me the feeling is missing.

I have the same problem with Avatar 3. I just don't feel excited to watch it because it seems too predictable and known, regardless of how technically excellent it is.

Games and films need to bring something exciting to the table. To me, riding a horse and shooting cowboys isn't exciting. But hey, that's just a matter of taste.

I can understand that sentiment. I've experienced similar feelings with games like Skyrim and Souls-like games, though my issue went the other way. Those medieval fantasy themes felt overused and lacking in originality to me, almost childish, in a sense. But at some point I decided they were worth trying.

I've heard that less than half a percent of players who bought the game actually finished it. I can see why - the early chapters can feel slow and tedious. The game relies heavily on story as the foundation for its setting and gameplay, which means you may need to invest considerable time in the narrative before it becomes truly exciting.

I think expecting to "play through an excellent Western movie" is the right mindset. The first few chapters deliberately build tension to make the final acts more satisfying.

Without that story investment, it's sort of like an impressive life simulation or sandbox.

Yeah I was aware that wasn't the best example. It was about the music and all that preceded the scene, the context.

Evaluate the story once you've finished it. What you're evaluating is likely the first couple of chapters.

About 1/3rd of all games bought are never played. About half reach the midpoint of a game. Only about 1/3rd are invested enough to see end credits. These are normal numbers.

The game starts you in the middle of story. Starting at the boat heist would be a much more interesting starting point and give players a reason to care about the characters.

The game has very little to offer in terms of fun substantive gameplay.

I agree that is a problem for modern Elderscrolls games. They are too generic because Bethesda lost all the creative genius that made Morrowind.

Dark Souls I disagree. I think Dark Souls 2 & 3 are very original, unique, and creative, even though, yes, it is still that medieval setting which is overdone to death. But they actually do something creative with it.

Skyrim is pretty lame and generic, which is why it has never been a fave game of mine. It is merely decent, not the masterpiece that people hold it up as.

Which why the next Elderscrolls will likely be a disappointment.

Maybe horse balls could save it from disappointment, though I’ve heard that game features horse assholes instead of horse balls.

To put this in other terms, the game starts in the post-peak valley of the first story arc. It makes sense to calm down the story and let the drama of the previous peak settle, the boat heist, and slowly build up for the next arc.

But it doesn't make any sense to start the game there. It's obviously bad writing to start a story in the middle of a story.

If anyone can put an asshole on a horse, it's Todd Howard.

$15 horse assholes DLC.
