There is sound logic behind it. Realism means lack of creativity and imagination. It also means precious development resources diverted away from fun gameplay mechanics.

Nobody plays a game for realism because if you wanted realism you would just go outside and touch grass.

Games are about fun. Realism is not fun. Which is why games were invented: the avoid realism.

Gamers who obsess over realism don't understand what makes a game great. No game is made great by its realism.

Realism in game design is like smearing more lipstick on a pig. Realism is easy, creativity is hard. You play games for the creativity they offer.

Look at Star Field. Todd made it realistically barren. And it sucks. Nobody plays it. Any designer worth his salt could have foreseen this. Nobody wants a realistic space exploration game because real space exploration is more boring than watching paint dry.

The kind of creativity involved is more grounded and bounded by so-called real-life parameters.

It's like comparing Breaking Bad with Harry Potter. Was the former less "creative” compared to the latter? Did it lose appeal by being more down-to-earth and adult than a fantasy world?

Obviously, you wouldn't expect to fight dragons or brew potions in such a piece of media. And yet, its appeal lies precisely in its gritty, grounded, mature quality.

Red Dead is one of those games that transcends the medium. You can imagine your uncle playing it - if he were even remotely open to trying something new. It's analogous to a well-made interactive movie.

Also, in this discussion about realism, it is easy to overlook other key elements like the story, context, setting, world, characters, soundtrack, morality, symbolism, overall technical quality and focus on detail.

Do you think Rayman's dick is detached like his hands? Can he launch it? Would he charge it by meatspinning?

Hell Let Loose captures realism fairly well as a cross between COD controls and a simulator. As a result it can be fairly tedious to play as you get realistic scenarios like being shot from 200m away by a guy you didn't even see or getting blown up by random artillery. I was once camping a wall and a random tank came out of the hedgerow and ran me over. It didn't even see me. It's a luck simulator, which is realistic but obviously not always fun.

That's the point of the design. Make it so accessible that your uncle can play it.

You have to admit that they accomplish that not through clever game design but by actually making it more like a movie and less like a game.

Well I didn’t read the responses talking about rayman

I just saw the post about gta 6 so I remember playing older versions in my past and i remember the strip clubs so i assumed gta 6 would have it

So I joked about the delay being unfortunate because i wanted to visit the strip club

And then you said rayman, meaning if I wanted to visit the clubs in rayman too,  i didn’t know what it was so i googled and it said its a game. So i joked that “that too” meaning yea i wanna go to the clubs in Rayman too

Hope you can sleep now :)

You ever play Rayman Origins? Even better imo.

For me only one Rayman exists. Everything else is junk.

Breaking Bad could have used a dragon or two.

I have never thought about Rayman's dick and I am not about to start.

No game is made great by its realism.

The same goes for movies and shows.

The Wire, for instance, is praised for its realism, but where’s the drama?

That’s why I prefer Oz, which is more theatrical yet highly unrealistic.

Games are about fun. Movies are about drama. Neither is about realism.

Reminds me of that trashy movie I watched one time called "Ad Astra". Just lonely Brad Pitt in space, so bad.

Realistic films are more acceptable than realistic games.

Of course no realistic film is actually realistic. They still cut out all the boring scenes that would happen in real life, which makes it watchable.

If a film was truly realistic no one would watch it. Imagine watching James Bond take a shit for 10 minutes. That's what realism gets you.

Rayman is the best game ever made.

Better than Conker's Bad Fur Day?

As a kid that was the best game ever, such a deep and twisted storyline.

Kinda like Crash Bandicoot with a crazy R-rated twist.

Rayman is a fine work of art. Conker's Bad Fur Day is visual sludge.

I love Rayman for the visuals.
