Id say that what you can do is blur the barriers of the ego. a dimmer ego will allow you a broader vision. a more opaque ego will make you feel locked into its limitations. you can increase your levels of awareness by going beyond those limitations, I guess that's what they mean by levels of consciousness since actually the level of consciousness of a heavy ego is the same as that of no ego, just change perception
