Awesome Documentary About Yogananda

9 posts in this topic

Recently watched this documentary about Yogananda's life and spiritual mission in the USA in the early 1900s.

Awesome stuff. Brought tears to my eyes.

You can get it on Amazon: click here. Or maybe on Netflix.

Watched this recently, myself, and loved it!  Next, I'd like the book :)

I have read his book Holly V, it's awesome.  I have not, however,  seen the film.  Thank you so much for sharing it Leo and I will create some time to watch it.

It's a good book. I wouldn't use it as a guide to getting enlightened (way too much woo-woo stuff in there), but it can certainly stoke up a passion for spiritual pursuits.

I enjoyed the documentary quite a bit.  With that said, I'm always somewhat put off by this deification of people as holy men.  Yoganada was a human like the rest of us and it's like they're trying to spin him into some kind of mythical religious figure.  Not a problem with Yoganada himself, but a problem with how the documentary creators are viewing him through rose tinted glasses.

Perhaps they should have added a scene where one of his disciples aptly described the stench and visual spectacle of his dumps so that the audience better understands his human-ness.
