Meditate Productively (from Deep Work: Rules For Focused Success In A Distracted World -  Cal Newport)

  • Take some time to occupy yourself physically (go for a walk, jogging, driving, showering, etc) and focus your attention on a single well-defined problem

 

  • Suggestion #1: Be Wary of Distractions and Looping
    • When you notice your attention slipping away from the problem, remind yourself that you can return to that thought later, then redirect your attention back
    • The mind will try to avoid hard problems
      • Be on guard for looping
      • Notice when you are trying to avoid the problem, and redirect your attention to it
  • Suggestion #2: Structure Your Deep Thinking
    1. Start with a review of the relevant variables for solving the problem
    2. Define the specific next-step question to answer using the variables
    3. With the relevant variables and the next-step question, you have a target for your attention
    4. Review carefully the answers found
