Good, simple, cheap e-reader/tablet recommendations?

What e-reader/tablet can you recommend for reading books and pdfs? There are a lot out there and I'd like to shortcut the research process by getting some recommendations on here. I know almost nothing about what's out there. I'd like to find a good reliable device to read pdfs that I've amassed that I can't bear to read on my notebook. These are my criteria:

  • Should probably be one of those ones that behaves like paper in that it needs ambient light to read the text, easier on the eyes.
  • Should be a bit old because I'd like to find it used. I like to buy used things to reduce wastage and save money.
  • Needs to be able to easily load pdfs from my notebook somehow
  • Should be pleasant and easy to use
  • Some decent battery life would be good

What I'm not looking for is something like an iPad that has a video screen.

Thanks!

What about Amazon products? They have the Kindle, which is designed specifically for reading e-books/pdfs. New ones go for around $100 USD, you probably can find an older version or used one for a lot less.

They also have the Fire tablets, which are pretty decent and are at a low cost. I bought my dad the Fire 7 tablet for his birthday and its not bad. Reads pdfs, ebooks, plays video, has two cameras but aren’t the best, downloads apps, pretty good but basic tablet. It only costed me around $80 CAD (tax included), or $50-$60 USD.

This is something I have also been looking for, unfortunately I have only find expensive stuff:

- The Remarkable (~$450 refurbished) https://remarkable.com

- ONYX BOOX MAX 2 (~$650 new) https://onyxboox.com/boox_max2  there is a new version coming, MAX 3

- Sony Digital Paper (~$450 new) https://www.sony.com/electronics/digital-paper-notepads/dpt-series this is the one I want to get, but for some reason it is not sold in Europe and it can only be found in the gray market for $1000+, however it is available in the US.

I hope it helps! You should be able to find them used/refurbished on the internet. I personally have not got anyone yet, but I am also very interested  on something similar, so please let us what you end up buying.
