Can anyone give me an overview of the different stages?

I was looking through the whole stage thing and I do have a faint idea of what it means but I have forgotten it over some time now. 

The green blue turquoise stage etc. 

Can anyone provide a simple overview or a link that is very detailed or explanatory on this topic.
