Reverse skillsmanship

The idea of working backwards to improve skill, can this apply to song writing? Instead of focusing on becoming a greater song writer, is understanding theory of music and various instruments key? A long side learning how to improve song write skills?

@Shakazulu I highly recommend doing this. Getting a firmer grip on how music works will skyrocket your creativity. Don't think of it as something separate from song writing it. Incorporate it as a component of your mastery craft.

@Shakazulu try writing down how you want the song to feel to the listener, and what your message is. Then meditate, when a lyric comes, write it down, go back to meditate, repeat.

The thing is, without knowing anything at all about what you're doing, it's not possible to tell what strategies would be best for you at this point.
