More of the American South Is Shockingly Turning Purple—and Even Blue!

15 posts in this topic

Tonight's midterm election results are absolutely remarkable!

Jon Ossoff has decisively won reelection in Georgia, Roy Cooper has crushed his Republican opponent in North Carolina, and Annie Andrews has pulled off a stunning upset in South Carolina, a state that Trump won by nearly 18 percentage points in 2024!

Meanwhile, Democrat Zach Dembo has flipped a Republican-held congressional district in Kentucky that Trump won by approximately 15 points in 2024.

Think about how extraordinary this is. Not too long ago, much of the South was considered an almost impenetrable Republican stronghold. Now we're seeing Democrats becoming increasingly competitive in states that were once regarded as safely Republican.

Of course, this doesn't mean the entire South is suddenly turning blue. Much of it remains deeply conservative, and one midterm election doesn't establish a permanent political realignment.

Nevertheless, Georgia and North Carolina are becoming major battlegrounds, and even South Carolina is demonstrating that Republicans can no longer take every Southern state for granted.

The Republican Party's dominance of the South may be far less secure than many people assumed.

If these political shifts continue beyond the Trump era, we could be witnessing the beginning of a significant long-term transformation of the American electoral map.

James Talarico won his Senate race in Texas! Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, just lost his seat in Texas!

Doubt.

It will seesaw on end forever because the rich get richer and middle class shrinks. Nothing will change and thus whoever in power will always get voted out.

I get your cynicism and I am still a major cynic myself, especially with politics.

However, what's happening tonight shows some kind of serious opportunity for the people take back our country if we fight like hell and unite together through collective action into a overwhelming mass movement to pressure the government and all of the other institutions to make the changes that we demand.

We were singing a different tune two years ago.

I get it, let's revel in some victory. But let's also not forget that the average person is a fucking imbecile and Plato was right - democracy is dangerous and flawed.

Yes, that's very true.

At the same time, have you studied the history of the entire labor movement and the entire black freedom movement?

Another Stunning Democratic Upset in the South: Progressive Populist Richard Ojeda Wins in North Carolina!

Another remarkable development from the 2026 blue tsunami!

Richard Ojeda, an outspoken working-class progressive populist and retired Army major, just defeated Republican Congressman Richard Hudson in North Carolina's 9th Congressional District!

And here's what makes this victory particularly extraordinary:

Donald Trump won this district by approximately 16 points in 2024.

Hudson won reelection by nearly 19 points in 2024.

Hudson wasn't just another Republican incumbent. He was the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), responsible for helping Republicans retain their House majority.

Ojeda defeated him despite being substantially outraised.

Ojeda is also a strong supporter of organized labor, workers' rights, getting corporate money out of politics, and challenging the wealthy political establishment.

This is another example of how Democrats don't necessarily need to run timid, establishment-friendly campaigns to win in traditionally Republican territory.

And it's particularly encouraging to see an unapologetic economic populist like Ojeda successfully appeal to voters in a historically conservative Southern congressional district.

The bigger picture is that Republican dominance across much of the South is becoming increasingly vulnerable, and progressive economic populism may have considerably more electoral appeal than conventional Democratic strategists have assumed.

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, who just won the governorship of Georgia, hasn't just become the very first woman, the first black person, and the first black woman to serve as governor of Georgia.

She has become the first Black woman ever elected governor of any U.S. state in American history.

She defeated billionaire Republican opponent, Rick Jackson.

She's also the first Democrat elected Georgia governor since Roy Barnes won in 1998.

Don't kid yourself. They will swing back Red. Trump has a unique taint surrounding him.

Plus the Dems will fail to solve national problems so the pendullum will swing back.

You think Dems are gonna fix capitalism? No.

I didn't say that these areas will be permanently blue, but they should be competitive for the long-run.

Republicans can't dominate the South forever. In fact, Democrats used to dominate the South for nearly 90 years before Republicans eventually dominated it. Like you've talked about before, nothing lasts forever, and progress in the long-run doesn't stop.

Yeah, I get what you're saying about how capitalism is never going to be fixed for decades.

But do you think that the Democrats won't get anything done at all even if they win back the presidency in 2028?

I expect them to do minor things, but nothing too significant.

You mean incremental progressive-leaning changes to the extent that were made during Biden's presidency?

What the results of these midterms have shown is that the people aren't just rebuking Trump and his party. They have also given a major middle finger to the entire establishment.

People want real change to the system, because they are getting sick and tired of the system not working for them.

Not going to happen. The system is capitalism and it will get worse, not better.

Then, why do most people say that they are sick and tired of Congress, the establishment, and the institutions not working for them?

The early 1900s progressive era programs, the New Deal, the Great Society, and so on were able to fundamentally change the system from a more unjust laissez-faire kind of capitalism into the most regimented, most free, and most fair version of capitalism we ever had.

We can and must make US capitalism into more of a social democracy. Otherwise, there could be untold national instability that we have never seen before including another 1890s depression or Great Depression.

Also, if the capitalism is only going to worse, not better then why did these newly elected Democrats bothered to run on fixing income inequality, ending corporate domination, busting monopolies, and ending corporate lobbying?

What would even be the point of having Democrats in power again if they are just going to nibble around the edges again and do useless hearings and investigations on Trump, the Republicans, big-tech, oligarchs, and what have you that won't lead to anything?

It seems people uninterested in politics turned out in high numbers to vote D. So, how much of the right stayed home and how many apolitical people turned out for the left? The right may not have moved much at all. I heard R turnout was only a few points above normal for midterms, while it was like 20 points higher for D. I forget the numbers, but it was a massive gain for D while R was on par with previous midterm elections.

Just going off my intuition, but I don't think much of the right flipped.

What if this is just fascination + identity + seriousness being inflated into universal importance?
