The Hellen Keller of animals. And just like Hellen Keller, super obvious in hindsight to be fake. Obviously a gorilla doesn't understand what a climate change is, or the concept of human emotions like sadness or greed. Obviously the trainer is being extremely generous with interpreting Koko's sign language. Gorillas don't even have the finger dexterity to entirely do human sign language. It's pretty damning too that the lab who had Koko never let anyone outside near to do controlled studies.

A good example of business incentives corrupting science. Koko turned into a feel-good mascot, just like Hellen Keller, and earned them millions. It might not even be entirely intentional. These animals trainers get roped up in their own excitement of thinking they taught their beloved pet to speak, not noticing their own influence. Eventually It's just becomes the path of least resistance when it makes your career. Hooks you up with celebrities and shit. Bad science. Bad.
