Internal Family System critique

6 posts in this topic

As we know  there are a lot of models do deal with the inner work. IFS is one of them.

This video talks about the nuance using this models.

Also, for many guys here,me included, the work of this guy can be a very good go for ego development. Yes, because while you dont realize God what you are going to do? INTEGRATION. with no integration this work becomes very swallow.

So check it

This guy have a body of work very complete.

Seems like his critique about IFS is that it's an inherently disintegrating and fragmenting theory. Fair enough argument. Perhaps at higher stages integration is more appropriate.

Developed people can hold more than one theory in their head at one time. Both IFS and a more integrated theory (like SD) can be true at the same time because some people can benefit from integration while other may benefit from deconstruction.

I think he is pointing towards the trap of becoming so emeshed into the parts that one keep imagining that some thoughts are coming from part X or Y and not realizing the thoughts may not need any part to rise up in our minds. Sometimes a sense of shame or guilt come up on me and I have no need to question myself if this is my inner child talking or whatever. Sometimes models become compartiments that cut us from acessing the embodied in the moment feeling that would be much more accurate as a feedback of what is acctually going on with us. I see this compartimentalization happening around me when I listen my peers talking. Every thing become intelectualized by the language in voga, like these people that use Astrology to explain everything for example.

That's 25 minutes of my life I'm never getting back.

However, it's a much broader critique than just IFS or any other model in particular. He painted it as a disciplinary critique when it should have been more structural.

The point is very simple: Just don't be dogmatic about the model you're using. The map is not the territory.

My 2 cents:

Dogmatism is a stage of development. As long as you're doing development work, you're eventually destined to outgrow it. It's a problem in the level of development/consciousness, and no amount of warnings can shortcut your way into development/higher levels.

You don't actually have to watch videos to engage with the point in them. You can ask Gemini to watch youtube videos and highlight the main points in the video and even rank it's accuracy in % so you can evaluate how bias the content creator is or what main points the people that post them resonate with and thus have a discussion with the person around it with 2 mins of research instead of watching these long ass videos that content creators make purposefully long to get more money out of adsense.

@Rafael Thundercat I like your point. I think identifying the root causes of your problems in life is very important but people are quick to form an identity out of their diagnosis as opposed to actually focusing on fixing the symptomps and just living a fun and aligned life.

Diagnosis like Bipolar and BPD are where I've seen people internalize this and live our their lives as forever dysfunctional people instead of just learning from the psychiatric literature and finding their own ways to solve their inner wounds as ultimately you and the psychiatric systems have very different core incentives and often times you getting better without their pharmaceuticals is bad for their career and profit margins to use an example common in the west.
