Books NOT to read and save your time for something else

7 posts in this topic

Is reading philosophy, psychology, western intellectual gloom a waste of time? I’m talking Nietzsche, Kant, Jung, Robert Greene, etc.

I’ve given them a go and found a lot of philosophy and western psychology is noise and that life is too short to try and read it all.

Intuitively you gotta stick to what pulls you in and what really resonates and gives you life changing insights that lead to an expansion of consciousness.

What do you want to read that will make you genuinely stronger and in love with life?  Not some nuanced shit a spiritually asleep intellectual wrote that has some cool notions and concepts but in reality doesn’t actually raise your consciousness.

Your consciousness should expand by double every time you read a book and if it’s not doing that it’s not a good book for you.

Is a lot of books on these topics a waste of time? Tell me what NOT to bother reading in this thread

Don't read Arnold Schwarzenegger's autobiography, that was some hours I'll never get back. No hate towards Arnold Schwarzenegger but the book is misleading and overly idealizes his journey & gives unhealthy diet advice while leaving out the heavy steroid use that got him where he is.

Whatever books you need at that moment of time in ur life

Reading just to read will give you diminishing returns essentially immediately

I think classical therapy models are good and practical. Like cbt, dbt, exposure therapy. I think those dont get enough credit here. These are very practical for mental health stuff tho

I actually bought it ages ago cause it’s on Leo’s book list. It’s not worth it?

It's the worst book I've read on his booklist imo. Edit: I found it dishonest, misleading and more or less useless. If you want an autobiography the Gandhi one "My Experiments With Truth" is really good, he essentially starts off the book about talking about how he was not sure whether he should write an autobiography at all because he was scared he'd change his mind on things later or end up writing something that ends up being misleading rather than illuminating.

That was a refreshing contrast when you compare it with Arnold's autobiography which is pretty much just Arnold telling glamorizing stories about his rise to success in bodybuilding, talking about doing unhealthy volumes of exercise(50-60 sets of squats in one session) in the forest(heavily steroid powered but conveniently leaves that out). With a bunch of hot models around for motivation and that they were drinking a lot of beer, it's practically just him bragging about living a rockstar life, spending time with hot models and meeting influential people. He also gives some questionable diet advice at the end of the book like that you can mix red wine & raw eggs into a shake and drink it. Spend your time on anything else imo lmao. The only value I can see from reading this book is that you get a glimpse into the mind of a person at the height of their career and how paradoxically you can be at the top while still being completely deluded in most areas of your life. In this sense it's insightful, but to me it was painful rather than illuminating to read.

I guess it comes down to whether you prefer looking at words or listening to sounds more.  It depends for me, there are benefits to both.
