It's not really about the numbers it's about iterating on feedback and pattern recognition. Doing it with wingmen and coaches help a lot because they can easily spot something you're doing wrong that could take you hundreds of approaches to figure out.

I agree to an extent. The Leo example is a good example in some ways.

However, I could see how someone could do 1000 approaches plus and still get unpromising results. Key reasons being not following good pickup theory, or not following good skill improvement theory. For example, Leo talks about having studied pickup theory as part of learning pickup. Imagine he'd just winged it.
