Atheism easily explains the concept of sin

12 posts in this topic

Sin is simply an action that makes your life worse overall.  Despite the fear mongering that religions do, there is need for the threat of Hell to scare people to act righteously. I was always confused why adults in our society rely on childish stories to teach people about the benefits of acting virtuously when the logical explanation is much more persuasive and less patronizing.

Here's an example of this idea beautifully articulated by a talented public thought leader Alex O'Connor

Kind of disagree . Sin could make your life worse, or it could make your life better at the expense of someone else . Now of course, society is a pyramid scheme, so some sin is always part of the game.

Hey thanks for the reply. Alex talks about this in the video and so does Leo in his videos.

If you disagree then go ahead and live your life in "sin" and see how good your life will be.

It's pretty safe to say that living in "sin", however you want to define it, will always bring you suffering eventually. Cheating, lying, scamming, greed might make your life materially better but internally those people are suffering.

@enchanted you have to commit some sins to survive , that's just life . Just try to minimize it , and contribute more value than you take. I'm not talking about lying , cheating, or greed. Going to you 9-5 job is sin, eating is sin, even seeking awakening is sin.

Right yes that's good advice.

In the Christian context sin is a specific thing like murder, greed, cheating, stealing. But you are right every action can be seen as sinful. By eating food we are "stealing" it from someone else etc.

@enchanted I understand, sorry I didn't watch the video before commenting.

To me sin is synonymous with surivival. There are ways of optimizing survival so it's less sinful but it's impossible to be completely free of sin. The Christian would say that's why surrender to God is important, because we can't be free of sin by our own actions , I tend to agree with that.

Deep stuff to think about for sure, thanks for sharing!

Good critique of freedom and hedonism.

He still doesn't really understand sin though.

Sin doesn't actually exist at the highest level. But yeah acting in a way that goes against who you are as a person will cause you to suffer internally.

You are the Truth that is your true identity. That means whenever you lie you are acting against your nature because your true nature is honesty.

With that said you live in a world that constantly tries to stop you from living life the way you see fit. So sometimes white lies are necessary.

As long you don't lie to take from others or burden others in some way then a lie is harmless. Just don't tell harmful lies and your fine.

At the end of your life you are gonna have a life review and you will get to see if you agreed with the way you lived.

If you have ever acted in a way that you consider opposite of who you are you will feel the effects of this.

You see right now the inner experience of everyone is hidden from you but in a life review all privacy is gone.

Bully someone before? You get to experience what it's like to be bullied by yourself.

So I think it's in your best interest to play nice

You are a selfless LACK OF APPEARANCE, that CONSTRUCTS AN APPEARANCE. But that appearance can disappear and reappear and we call that change, we call it time, we call it space, we call it distance, we call distinctness, we call it other. But notice...this appearance, is a SELF. A SELF IS A CONSTRUCTION!!!

So if you want to know the TRUTH OF THE CONSTRUCTION. Just deconstruct the construction!!!! No point in playing these mind games!!! No point in creating needless complexity!!! The truth of what you are is a BLANK!!!! A selfless awareness....then that means there is NO OTHER, and everything you have ever perceived was JUST AN APPEARANCE, A MIRAGE, AN ILLUSION, IMAGINARY.

Everything that appears....appears out of a lack of appearance/void/no-thing, non-sense (can't be sensed because there is nothing to sense). That is what you are, and what arises...is made of that. So nonexistence, arises/creates existence. And thus everything is solved.

I agree Alex is no where near the highest levels of understanding but still interesting to listen to and a great speaker and has many great ideas on certain subjects.

Can you briefly explain what sin is?

Sin is whatever pulls you away from God.
