That's a good point.  But how does one verify if they're in deep sleep or whether that is a fantasy or metaphor?

Just observe, that you are conscious right now of that gap in your consciousness. If it didnt exist how can you be conscious of it? Sleep exist, but you are only conscious of it after you awake from it.
