That's true but this wasn't a constant throughout that entire period.

Before the war, relations between Russia and Ukraine were almost friendly; they are ethnically very similar, many Ukrainians speak Russian, and they had a pro-Russian president.

However, there was a strong current of radical Ukrainian nationalism, which the US promoted, since they are adversaries of Russia and therefore it is natural for them to promote what is against Russia. It was an aggressive movement with disastrous consequences.

The Maidan "revolution" was an illegal coup against an elected president who could have been democratically removed a year later. Afterward, the new government elevated Stephan Bandera, the architect of the Jewish Holocaust at Treblinka and a virulent anti-Russian, to a national hero. The Russians in Ukraine, about 30% of the population, panicked and initiated referendums, such as the one in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia, and then a civil war began.

The US helped Ukrainian nationalists, and surprisingly, President Biden's son, addicted to drugs like crack and to "young" prostitutes, was appointed director of the largest Ukrainian gas company. After 8 years of war when the Azov battalion, openly nazi, killed Russian civilians day by day, the war started and all Europe repeated that this is the war of Putin, a megalomaniac who's crazy, then they helped Ukraine to be a destroyed desert with all the young population dead or emigrate.
