WTF Canada?

18 posts in this topic

Is anyone here from Canada?

I thought Canada was done with Pierre. Is he making a come back?

I thought Canadians voted for Carney because Trump made them realize Pierre was a shitty idea.

Also, why in the fuck would Canadians vote for a banker to be PM. Is a banker the best they could come up with after Pierre?

I thought Americans were stupid.

I think that Trump and Pierre are backed by the same billionaires. They use the same propaganda tactics. Blame immigrants, demonize liberals, etc.

Why wouldnt you vote in a banker we got fucked after trumps tarrifs. We want someone who can understand how to make the dollar work and he seems to be doing good. Pierre is just a slogan. Canada cant afford to do what trump is doing to the states.

Pierre has the same tactics as conservative in the states. Dont say what you are going to do and blame the left. Only talk about the left never about yourself.

Yeah, I agree. How he got as far as he did is very concerning.

That's what I've been wondering. In the US, if you elect a banker, you can bet your ass they don't give a fuck about the American people. To see that happen in another country is suspect. What makes you all think a rich man gives a fuck about the poor and middle class in Canada? That would not happen here in the US.

Yeah, I get part of the logic. But who is he going to make the dollar work for?

So Carney won because he's a very good, charming, rational, well thought out intelligent speaker, with good credentials (the exact opposite of Trump). Also he's closer to center than Trudeau and sadly Trudeau became unpopular (for reasons I can't quite understand) and Pierre Pollievre was too similar to Trump .

The banks in Canada are famously different than in the US. Canadian banks are less risky, and more stable, less predatory, and better regulated than in the US. That's why Canada faired much better in the '08 crash than the US. This is a point of national pride in Canada. So being a Canadian and Central banker isn't a bad thing in Canada.

Canadians might be slightly smarter than the Americans but that doesn't make them completely immune to populist tactics like the ones used by Trump/Pollievre.

@enchantedNice explanation.

I have been wondering how Trudeau became unpopular. I thought it might because of populist propaganda. I didn't do an in depth study of Trudeau, but he seemed pretty decent. Although, the whole thing with black face didn't seem to help him.

I wonder how he stacks up to AOC or Mamdani in terms of policy?

I have been wondering how Trudeau became unpopular

So many reasons. I've been on both sides of this issue personally

  • Pandemic: Trudeau became unpopular around the pandemic, when he invoked the emergency act and freezed people's bank account who helped with the protests. People were not happy about the lockdowns and Canada's vaccine rules felt too controlling.
  • Right-wing Media Influence: I was watching a bunch of Reels around the time Trudeau became unpopular. He has sufferred from a lot of US right-wing media around LGBTQ/Woke, similar to how Biden and Harris became unpopular. Also, there were A LOT of videos online where he is asked questions and literally doesn't answer them at all.
  • Immigration: Trudeau has admitted too many people into Canada. More people amplified problems around healthcare, housing, and unemployment. The institutions were not ready to handle the amount of immigrants.
  • Housing: We had skyrocketing house prices in 2021 after the pandemic. BOC slashed interest rates massively to revive the economy. In combination with immigration, housing prices went up a lot. Even though interest rates are controlled by the BOC, I believe Trudeau took the blame.
  • Been there too long: People got tired off him personally, he has been around for 10 years.

Canada has no distinct culture.

And it should really be a republic. There's little to be gained rrom aving the Briitsh king as its king.

Do you think this was actually true? Or propaganda? Lies like this was how Trump won.

For context those "protestors" were antivax truck drivers who permanently parked their trucks, blocking busy roads and honked their fog horns day and night for weeks. Some were relying on funding from right wing groups including from the US. It was Canada's equivalent of the Jan 6 "protest" in the US.

Citizens including the ones who couldn't sleep due to the noise were begging Trudeau to do something.

never got canada. it's pretty cultureless. there is no distinct vibe that makes Canada stand out. It's contrary to Australia, which like Canada was a former "white Dominion" british colony. Yet, Australia has a distinctness in its vernacular, sports, foods, etc. Crocodile Dundee was a stereotype but it still symbolished "Aussieness". Canada doesn't have that. Proximity to the USA isn't an excuse. If anything, that should reinforce distinctness. the growth in use of Welsh and Gaelic in Wales and Scotland are examples of this.

But many canadians are hard working polite decent people, but gov has no authority and is rotten to the core.Unless ...they come up with something really really funny at the end of the whole shpectackle shircus, then congrats!

@Breathe Pierre is the leader of the opposition. He's just loud mouthed and doesn't do much right now and pretty sure the conservatives are looking to replace him.

The biggest news in Canada this year will be the Alberta referendum. Something like 20-40% of people here support it so we'll see what happens and if it goes through it'll be pretty massive news globally.
