Meditation body position

6 posts in this topic

Those of you who meditate, do some of you have a different than regular meditation body position? I had to find my own one, because I find the regular one incredibly uncomfortable and can't stay in it. In this new one I still have my back straight and it keeps me alert too and not sleepy. Although if I wanted to meditate for long, I would probably have to move around. What are yours?

Yes straight back and staying alert is what matters. Also don't clock watch. Just set the timer and when time thoughts arise, say to yourself, this is my time to be happy. And go back to the stillness again.

Meditation is simply resting in being, so really there are endless positions you can do, as each moment is new, each situation is unique, find what works best for you and adjust accordingly to what feels most natural :) Meditation for me has evolved into something else entirely, nothing alike the traditional way, but i really enjoy resting on my knees or head on the ground (childs pose) or surrendered laying back on the grass, stretched out like a star or cross, or back rested by a tree, are some other ways that are less traditional and yet i rest as deeply, if not more, because its intuitive.

In Yoga they have Asana practice, this is what most think Yoga is, but its just a part of it.. The theory is too put Your Body in perfect Symmetry with the Cosmos, the Rishis/Guru's of old were so intouch with everything that they knew which postures work, so master one posture, perfect the alignment and then You become vessel of the Cosmic Intelligence..

With sitting practices, which is a different sadhana than asana practice, as You said Back/Spine straight is the main thing, if You find that while sitting in a chair or otherwise then its all good:)

Sitting on the couch cross-legged works for me. The back support is nice.

Over the past few weeks, I've started incorporating standing meditation as well, after reading a book about qigong. It's a much different practice than what most people think when they think meditation — but worth exploring!

I think overall, don't overthink it. There are no hard rules. Practitioners of various traditions will try to say it must be done this way or that, but they are simply lost in dogma.

I sit in the half-lotus position (which is cross-legged, but with the foot of one leg resting on the calf of the other). I also sit on a folded-up blanket so that my hips are above the level of my knees (a firm cushion would also work), that's been a real game-changer for me because it allows me to sit comfortably upright without straining my back.
