Mamdani played Trump. He convinced Trump to suck up to him on camera so that he could get some temporary concessions from Trump, who’ll go back to hating Mamdani in a few months for being “woke Islamic communist.”

Odds are this meeting with Trump took off some of the political pressure from New York. It’s likely there are migrants in New York, today, who won’t be wrongfully deported in the coming months because Trump will take it easier on the city after Mamdani soothed his ego.

Trump is a megalomaniac retard, but being able to use his impulses to protect people’s lives is a W in my book. 
 

Besides, like I said, Trump is going to go right back to attacking Mamdani once he realises Mamdani actually believes in his principles and will demand Trump actually the govern the country properly, which he won’t do. This shit is obvious.

The NYC mayor is literally just 1 dude vs the strong, resilient, highly cohesive and unified large community of the NYPD. 1 person vs 33,000+ NYPD members. That is literally a whole city amount of people within the city. An entire unique culture of its own you have to deeply understand first before arrogantly and hastily poking it with a stick. It’s a frat house man-child city.

It’s not that the mayor is powerless on paper, it’s that the NYPD can easily act independently, collectively, and visibly in ways a mayor cannot realistically punish. That’s real power.

Even when they enact reform statues or disciplinary frameworks, the NYPD is still controlled by the Police Commissioner and union contracts yes… but de Blasio pushing chokehold bans and enhanced transparency were inconsistent and lenient because cultural resistance within the PD diluted and slowed policy implementation. Reforms passed by democratically elected leaders are frequently nullified by internal bureaucracy. It functions more like an autonomous administrative state.

In 2014-2015, the PD dropped arrests for low-level offenses by 90% for weeks, ignored summonses, and temporarily stopped enforcing quality-of-life laws just because they disliked something the mayor said. Not even because of a policy change or contract dispute, petty stuff. An entire PD rebelled, and the mayor couldn’t punish them, fire them, or stop them. If ANY other city agency did that…heads would roll but NYPD shrugged.

The incident in 2020 when they leaked his daughter’s personal information on the internet after she got arrested in the BLM protests….

They physically turned their back to the mayor at a funeral, etcetcetc. LAPD has a similar chokehold on their city.

The NYPD is more powerful that NYC mayors because it openly defies elected leadership, humiliates the mayor publicly, retaliates personal family members of the mayor, and weaponizes unions without consequences.

Unironically yeah. Mamdani has mastered the art of agreeing with someone without actually agreeing with them. Bernie knows how to do it too.

Why it’s not a more common skill among politicians I don’t know, but it can make you super effective in getting your message across without being dragged down into the valid culture war bullshit of usual political discourse.

That’s the issue with that sort of NYC liberal stage green. They are green in the sense of being new as well. You can tell. The positive is they bring fresh ideas and leadership. The negative is they lack the wisdom and foresight to navigate the real issues facing us. In my opinion going to meet Trump is not a good look nor the political approach you take when a country is being threatened by a quasi authoritarian system. The first thing he should have done is put the city on high alert for ICE raids, set up barricades and threatened arrests of ice agents. Green neglects the toughness and self assertiveness of lower stages. They play by the rules but it’s mostly because they don’t know how to punch. Joe Biden did well over Trump partially because he does know how to throw punches in a democratic system but his ideas are old and he still respects the system enough not to overstep his power. Biden had that masculine old school wisdom and knows how to navigate old systems. Mamdami is trying to push his progressive ideals and still play his little liberal equality game, has an all female transition team filled will liberal arts graduates who will toss soft throws. It’s textbook 101 shit wrong with progressives in the USA. They are just too damn gay for their own good. You get eaten in the jungle when you show weakness.

Trump literally said in the meeting that he's going to get the criminals out of new york, he's sending the national guard and ice.

This was a smart move by Mamdani imo,

the fact is he’s just a mayor, having a bad relationship with the president is not a good idea,

He also didn’t relent on any of his positions or issues or even his rhetoric, though that was partly graciousness from Trump who didn’t push it.

Mamdani also succeeded in damaging the attack ads against people involved with him like Hochul, her opponent was using her endorsement of him as saying she’s aligned with communist jihadists based on trumps rhetoric, by trump distancing himself from that this attack line is weakened.
