Why seed oils are the perfect boogeyman

21 posts in this topic

  • It's that it's simple and easy to identify (oil made of seeds)
  • It's a food item that people don't have a strong preference for or against (it has a relatively neutral taste and is used as a means to an end, as a cooking accessory, more than a food you want to eat)
  • It's not seen as strictly necessary (you can get fats from many other sources)
  • It's tied to "you fear what you don't understand" with respect to the processing steps for making the oil (involving sometimes spooky-sounding chemicals and modern industrial processes)
  • It's tied to "big money" capitalist conspiracies ("big food companies just want to earn money") and conspiracies of narrative control (big food companies lobbying in government, science)
  • It's tied to the naturalistic frame or fallacy ("the processes for making the oil are not natural", "natural is better"), simple in- and out-group dynamic
  • It's a food item that people don't know much about so they can easily adopt a new narrative and usually one that plays on weaknesses and that sticks

Now, I haven't made an empirical case for or against its health effects. But notice how many things are not good for you but how some things are amplified more than others. Feel free to add more things or find a similar boogeyman.

Milk? Red meat? Refined sugar?

Not saying they're similar to seed oils in this context, by the way.

Yes and there are many other (some worse) examples than seed oils humans put in their bodies today. Although I would never touch Canola oil (a highly toxic industrial oil), Cold-pressed olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, macadamia oil ect.. are much healthier and gentler on the body.

My body runs on olive oil squeezed by virgins (isn't that why they call it that?).

Anyways, I feel really good after eating extra virgin olive oil. It's like it lubes up the entire machinery.

I like how you stated that :P And yes EV olive oil and coconut are among the lightest for the body, a little drizzle on salad or with a smoothie (coconut) or brew is great.

I usually focus more on the (whole food) itself like getting the oils i need from the avocado, coconut flesh, olive, nuts/seeds themselves, easier on the body, more wholistic nutrition and balance of release of essential fatty acids, protein, minerals ect.. But I don't mind a little bit of EV oil here and there.

On the other hand... I almost died from Canola oil and fried foods, still have some inflammation in my spine from that experience.

Hmm, I've been avoiding fruit juices, just eating the whole fruits, but mostly due to blood sugar and that I would've gotten the processed pasteurized crap. Avoiding oils, not sure with that one. The things I eat aren't usually very naturally oily. Most times when I avoid added sources of fat either through oils or dairy, I just feel on edge, like my cell membranes become dry.

And people say "placebo!" when I say shit food makes me feel like shit.

@Carl-Richard Yeah, how i see it is, the further away the food from the Source (tree, ground, pond) ect.. both in time and distance and processing, the more toxic and potentially poisonous it becomes for our bodies and minds.

This might sound weird - but I react very strangely to olive oil.

If I take a tablespoon of olive oil it will have the same painkilling effect perceived as 200mg ibuprofen.

I get slight euphoria from ibuprofen (as well as acting as a painkiller) and olive oil has the same effect!

I have been this way since a kid.

So I literally eat a tablespoon of olive oil to act as a painkiller....

@Natasha Tori Maru Could be the anti-inflammatory effect. I get similar effects from eating cumin powder.

Raw animal fat is the best, point blank, even compared to olive oil. Animal fat has wayy more nutrients. Seed oils are toxic. Seeds are the most toxic part of a plant.

Because of the anti-inflammatory effect maybe

All fatty animal products in general. Checks all the criteria boxes you have outlined. Sugar also checks all of those boxes, but is what's actually bad for you. If you're fat or skinny fat, even just a little overweight in this day and age, then it's 100% just sugar and carbohydrates in general

@Schizophonia @Carl-Richard

The anti-inflammatory effect was my guess also.

I just find it odd that I can perceive it so clearly. I do have a lot of olive oil in my diet as a result.

I am curious does this happen with just regular store bought olive oil or have you tried a high quality extra virgin organic (cold-pressed) olive oil?  A lot of the store bought stuff is highly refined and often mixed and not true/real olive oil.

Could be contaminated too

I once tasted real olive oil, it was fluro green in color and soo potent and peppery compared to the store-bought stuff.

I use cold pressed extra virgin olive oil - but only for adding to my food and not for cooking (or when I have a spoonful as a painkiller).

Store purchased stodge gives me a strange googy feeling in my stomach when taken raw.

I add 2 tablespoons of the cold pressed olive oil to my vegetable bakes most evening. I try to eat minimal meat (small amount of fish, mainly eggs/nuts and vegetable diet) + some fruit (the stuff I can digest). Eating this way increased my bodies sensitivity overall. Enhanced mindfulness/meditation. When I transitioned to eating this way 10 or so years ago I noticed the painkilling effects of the olive oil.

It makes me wonder just how much sensitivity the average human has lost due to poisoned environment.

Many of these eating tips were from my half-greek grandmother (silent generation) who is 97 now.

Yeah i hear ya sister, believe me I am very sensitive these days with all the fasting and cleansing i have done and way I eat. It can be both a blessing and a curse, depending on the environment you live in and people around you. I mostly live a raw plant-based food lifestyle, unless I am dealing with some heavy emotions or trauma then i sometimes incorporate more roots, tubers and denser foods for nervous system support.

:x

Even such small things come into it - I find meditating by the Yarra River in my local bushlands, away from traffic, Wifi, electrical emf etc has huge effects on how easily I can reach states of pure single pointed focus / being.

The further on in the path you go it is so totally natural to just discard things that impede us. No force needed to stop doing the thing. Even when it may have been a crutch or coping mechanism. Things just naturally fall away. No struggle to drop addictions or compulsions.
