What is an appropriate amount of yoga for a beginner?

5 posts in this topic

I've been doing meditation for an hour a day, and sometimes even more than an hour, for a few years now. In the past I have tried to get out of my comfort zone, most notably I've successfully done Shamanic Breathing every Friday for 13+ weeks straight.

I have done yoga in the past, but I was never disciplined enough to make it a daily habit. The only book on yoga I have is 'The Secret Power of Kriya Yoga', by Santata Gamana.

When recommending to me a daily yoga schedule, keep in mind that I'm quite busy, as I'm a working student. But I do want to create a daily habit. Is 15 minutes a day a good idea?

@Husseinisdoingfine the series that book is a part of is very good. And the autobiography by the same author (going by a different name) is probably my favorite book of all time when it comes to spirituality.

https://www.amazon.com/Liberation-Spiritual-Autobiography-Av-Neryah/dp/9893515718/

The first 1/3 is about his time in a cult and is kind of lame, but it gets very illuminating when he goes independent and devotes massive amounts of time to meditation. His map for the process is the most helpful and best I've seen.

I don't know what's "good" for you. I believe you cannot know, too.

Everybody is different, every day is different, there are unlimited ways how you can do yoga. Just start, be curious, and see what works

I’m a serious yoga student and practitioner and becoming a teacher this yea (doing a 600 hour training with a top competive school) my focus is Indian Traditional Hatha/Tantra Yoga which works specifically with asanas for moving kundalini and Kriyas

to be honest, no little Book like that is going to truly teach you yoga, it’s almost a joke. Yoga is a deep and complex science for awakening and it’s important to do it properly with correct training.

Id recommend finding a school where you can take an e course or something and learn the foundations of proper Hatha yoga

From there you can build a daily practice. 15 min is probably too short, you need at least 30 to do the proper asanas. You seem disciplined enough so I think you can do it
