  6. Thanks for sharing this. I decided to go vegetarian about a year ago and don't regret it. I think switching to a plant base diet is very beneficial, however the best thing we can do now is getting behind candidates and politicians who take this issue seriously. What's needed is radical change in economic policies.
  7. Climate change: Warmth shatters section of Greenland ice shelf By Jonathan Amos BBC Science Correspondent 14 September 2020 Related Topics Greenland ice loss A big chunk of ice has broken away from the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf - 79N, or Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden - in north-east Greenland. The ejected section covers about 110 square km; satellite imagery shows it to have shattered into many small pieces. The loss is further evidence say scientists of the rapid climate changes taking place in Greenland. "The atmosphere in this region has warmed by about 3C since 1980," said Dr Jenny Turton. "And in 2019 and 2020, it saw record summer temperatures," the polar researcher at Friedrich-Alexander University in Germany told BBC News. Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden is roughly 80km long by 20km wide and is the floating front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream - where it flows off the land into the ocean to become buoyant. At its leading edge, the 79N glacier splits in two, with a minor offshoot turning directly north. It's this offshoot, or tributary, called Spalte Glacier, that has now disintegrated. 'Unprecedented' ice loss as Greenland breaks record Milne Ice Shelf: Satellites capture Arctic ice split Satellites record history of Antarctic melting Image copyright Copernicus Data/ESA/Sentinel-2B Image caption The ice is being attacked from above and below The ice feature was already heavily fractured in 2019; this summer's warmth has been its final undoing. Spalte Glacier has become a flotilla of icebergs. Look closely at the satellite pictures and the higher air temperatures recorded in the region are obvious from the large number of melt ponds that sit on top of the shelf ice. The presence of such liquid water is often problematic for ice platforms. If it fills crevasses, it can help to open them up. The water will push down on the fissures, driving them through to the base of the shelf in a process known as hydrofracturing. This will weaken an ice shelf. Oceanographers have also documented warmer sea temperatures which mean the shelf ice is almost certainly being melted from beneath as well. "79N became 'the largest remaining Arctic ice shelf' only fairly recently, after the Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland lost a lot of area in 2010 and 2012," explained Prof Jason Box from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). "What makes 79N so important is the way it's attached to the interior ice sheet, and that means that one day - if the climate warms as we expect - this region will probably become one of the major centres of action for the deglaciation of Greenland." Greenland and Antarctica ice loss accelerating Greenland Ice Sheet: 'More than 50 hidden lakes' detected Climate change: Greenland's ice faces melting 'death Image copyright Copernicus Data/ESA/Sentinel-2B Image caption The trunk of N79 is covered in melt ponds and streams The Northeast Greenland Ice Stream drains about 15% of the interior ice sheet. The stream funnels its ice either down N79 or the glacial member just to the south, Zachariae Isstrom. Zachariae has already lost most of its floating ice shelf area. Prof Box said N79 could resist longer because it was penned in right at its forward end by some islands. This lends a degree of stability. But, he added, the shelf continues to thin, albeit mostly further back along the trunk. "This will likely lead to N79 disintegrating from the middle, which is kind of unique. I guess, though, that won't happen for another 10 or 20 years. Who knows?" he told BBC News. July witnessed another large ice shelf structure in the Arctic lose significant area. This was Milne Ice Shelf on the northern margin of Canada's Ellesmere Island. Eighty sq km broke free from Milne, leaving a still secure segment just 106 sq km in size. Milne was the largest intact remnant from a wider shelf feature that covered 8,600 sq km at the start of the 20th Century. The fast pace of melting in Greenland was underlined in a study last month that analysed data from the US-German Grace-FO satellites. These spacecraft are able to track changes in ice mass by sensing shifts in the pull of local gravity. They essentially weigh the ice sheet. The Grace mission found 2019 to have been a record-breaking year, with the ice sheet shedding some 530 billion tonnes. That's enough meltwater running off the land into the ocean to raise global sea-levels by 1.5mm.
  8. I think this was proven fake. However there is some speculation that this may have been a reenactment of a real autopsy after the incident at Rosewell, NM. Also you guys should check out 'Identified Flying Objects: A Multidisciplinary Scientific Approach to the UFO Phenomenon' by Michael Paul Master https://www.amazon.com/Identified-Flying-Objects-Multidisciplinary-Scientific/dp/1733634061 He hypothesizes that the beings piloting these crafts may actually be our future descendants. He points out the unlikelihood of them being extraterrestrial considering that vast amount of space between star systems. He also goes over the anthropomorphic feautures commonly associated with the 'Greys' and why its more likely they're apart of the human lineage as oppose to being a species from another star system. Greys have too many similar traits to humans and any alien life is likely to be radically different from us physically.
  9. Not to detract from the premise of the thread but 60 million Americans plan on voting for Trump AGAIN. I agree voting for him is absolutely absurd btw.
  10. Did this incident even require an arrest? That's a worthy question we should all be asking. Why not just let him walk home or give him a ride home.
  11. If you're true intent is to shed light on police brutality (and not denigrating the character of black people murdered by cops) , shouldn't you be advocating for de-militarized policing or police reform? It seems you're more upset about the outrage garnered from George Floyd's murder and less concerned about police brutality (which you've pointed out affects ALL communities).
  12. Are you implying that because statistically blacks commit more crime, there shouldn't be outrage when an unarmed black person is murdered by rogue cops? Also the outrage doesn't just solely stem from George Floyd, but also from Breonna Taylor and Ahmuad Aurbrey. And lets not forget about a string of incidents of white people calling the police on black people doing everyday activities. This notion that the "left" or the media concocted this narrative is BS. Police brutality in the black community is a LONG standing issue. White people using the police as a weapon against black people has been an issue. The only difference now is that it's on film for the entire world to see. And of course there are incidents of whites being killed by cops. The real question is why White America so silent on those incidents. It seems to me that White America is more conditioned to accept militarized policing even when its against their own best interest. As long as heavy handed policing and fascist policies are perceived to be geared towards those 'uncivilized' black and brown people the white community (at large) is completely fine with it.
  13. I've always been a bit skeptical of David Icke and others who espouse a lot of these conspiracy theories. Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like David Icke (and especially Alex Jones) have a strong bias against what are widely accepted as leftist positions. One such example of this is claiming climate change is a globalist agenda. They also tend to single out billionaires like George Soros, which strikes me as having slight anti-Semetic undertones. If they equally criticized billionaire elites like the Koch brothers, perhaps I'd take their theories more seriously. However it seems like a lot of the conspiracy theories espoused are in essence, stage Blue backlash against Green. I think many of David Icke's views can just be explained away by the unfettered capitalism that has taken root in our world. However, I am almost certain that he and his followers would be close minded to this possibility. I do not believe there are elites with evil hidden agendas to dominate the world populace. I view the world as a wild horse, where everyone is scheming and manipulating to make larger and larger profits at the expense of our environment and human dignity.
  14. People seek answers for a world they do not understand. And they exclusively seek answers that validate their own biases. The problem with too many conspiracy theorists is that in an attempt to be open minded, they close their minds to worldviews that do not fit their narrative of the world. And many of these conspiracies are fear based and too extreme. Usually the truth is more complex and somewhere in the middle. They tend to view the world in black and white without appreciating the complexity of the world.
  15. I think the documentary makes it quite clear. Either we address over consumption or nature will force us to. It doesn't seem like we have much of a choice.
  16. Thought you guys may find this interesting. I am not to promote conspiracy theories but I think its worth having a legit discussion about the phenomena What do you guys think they are?
  17. Thanks for the replies everyone.@electroBeam has some very interesting insights about the possibility of some of them bring drones. Given the way in which some behave and maneuver it is hard to believe their piloted by anything biological. Then again we are basing this from our own limited human perspective and understanding.
  18. Bernie was a very bright light and gave millions of people hope. Of course the struggle is not over. All this signifies is that we have to push further and harder to let our voices be heard. With this pandemic and Climate Change we are facing a very uncertain (and potentially grim) future. However we should not let our movement become an after thought in the annals of history. 50 years from now when young people ask their parents how things got to be how they are - our movement should be highlighted as one of the few who stood up against the status quo.
  19. I don't think the problem is necessarily government. Its also the unconscious masses who vote for unconscious government officials. As we rise in consciousness so will our government. Even government in its current forms has positive aspects. Without some governmental regulations all the corruption you mentioned above would be exacerbated. The problem isn't government, it is the corruption and collusion we've allowed to penetrate it.
  20. I would have started testing people who came from epicenters of the virus to start. Also testing samples of the population would have beneficial in determining who had the virus and whether there was community spread. And look how well gutting the program has worked so far. I like Dr Fauci by the way. That isn't a legitmate reason to ignore and not heed warnings of a potential pandemic. You are correct on this. However he did down play the threat virus nonethless and it certainly didn't help our situation. I don't disagree with you here. The bottom line is that his response to the virus has been pretty bad. I am no fan of Hilary or Obama but I feel their response would have been stronger.
  21. I would have accepted the testing kits from WHO and started doing immediate testing. We lost valuable time by not doing initial testing. I wouldn't have cut our Pandemic Response Force. I would have listened to our intelligence agencies and followed the strategy to combat the spread of the virus And most importantly I wouldn't have called it a "Democratic Hoax" and down played the severity of a virus. Whether you're a Trump supporter or not, he dropped the ball on this. A strong initial response may have been the difference between ten thousand deaths and a hundred thousand deaths. Its all to early to tell of course. However, his weak response should be an automatic disqualifier. I am no fan of Hilary but I think she would have handled the crisis totally differently.
  22. Donald Trump made a hard bed for himself. Had he listened to the experts initially we wouldnt be in the severe situation we're in. Sorry for the harsh original post. I've known some people in my personal life who've already passed away from this virus. His failure to handle the crisis early makes me very angry.
  23. I slightly agree with the first paragraph. Your point went downhill at about.....paragraph 2.
  24. Isn't this the guy who fired his black police chief after he supposedly spoke out against police brutality? I am not Bernie or Bust and I do want more conscious leadership in the White House. However, based on his sketchy past and corporate backing, I cannot in good conscious vote for him if he is the nominee.
