Playing with Perspectives

512 posts in this topic

Standing on your present experience, what new thought, observation, or insight can you generate? What is taking place in your experience that you are not yet aware of?

Generate a new insight for yourself - one arising from experiential openness rather than from the insidious domain of "second-hand knowledge", which comprises everything you think you know.

Consider that genuine openness may be grounded in "nothing." Make an attempt to experience or reach that "place", and then inquire from there.

If no perspective is true in itself - and let's say that everything you have regarding life, reality, and yourself is a perspective, a particular way of seeing things - then what can be said to be true about these things? What are they, in themselves?

Certainly, neither the accumulation nor the elimination of perspectives will resolve this dilemma. A perspective may be sound, accurate, illogical, functional, or outright foolish - but the truth is not to be found in any perspective (not even the truth of perspective.)

What is outside your perspective or view of the world, for example? What do you think is true about yourself and reality, emotions and the body, society and others, success and health? Is every perspective believed, or a belief? How do you see perspective?

Beyond that, we could also ask ourselves what perspective itself is, and how it comes to exist.

Quote

20.8 It also reveals to us an aspect of our own manipulative mind. No matter how we try to justify or ignore it, if being genuine means not knowing what to do, where to stand, or how to present oneself, we will tend to choose a path of inauthenticity instead. Since everything within the domain of self-survival is evaluated, we see that “real” and “authentic” have a different value than unreal and fake. A lack of realness implies a lack of substance and therefore a lack of worth. Self as unreal would have no value, and so the idea can’t be taken seriously. The mere notion that self is not real is unacceptable for us since it represents a real threat to the self. Therefore, suspicion of our possible unreality must be hidden away from others to preserve the perception of our value and meaning, and must also be kept hidden from ourselves for the same reason.

- Peter Ralston, Book of Not-Knowing

I understand, I like it as well. It's consistent, seamless, efficient, and it stays out of your way, unlike Windows... at times. It can even look nicer, too - partly because its user interface is fairly coherent.

And honestly, who isn't gay these days? :P
