Range - overspecialization - Anna Wintour, Bill Gates, where is the line?

I've always thought of specializing was the way to success. I wouldn't say Bill Gates and Anna Wintour wasn't specialized, yet they say having a broad range of skills is important.

Here Kobe Bryant (A guy who knows something about specialty) talks about range. (Kobe was an all around skilled basketball player. Good at shooting, offense, defense, off ball, driving). But he did spend 36 years of his life only specializing on basketball. Bill Gates on programming and business. Wintour on Fashion, editing and business.

So I guess my question is where is the line to specialization? And where should we allow ourselves to have broad range of skills, and where should we have ourselves focused?
