Could neanderthals become enlightened?

Could neanderthals become enlightened? If not, at which point did we receive the ability to wake up from the dream and why?

Nobody wakes up, but if Neanderthals had self awareness, the cognitive event known as enlightenment (collapse of self awareness / personal doer-ship) probably could happen. Of course, I don't know.

In some ways, neanderthals were more awake than most homo sapiens. They were closer to nature, and less entrapped by the conditioned mind.
