Do Nothing- Purging Thoughts

7 posts in this topic

Hi all,

When using the do nothing technique, it seems as if certain thoughts do not come up during the meditation, however as you get on with the day, they tend to show up.

Why do these same thoughts not come up during the meditation ?

Tho ego can be a very tricky thing indeed. When we start out in meditation we all start out with different ideas of what an effective meditation session actually is. Maybe a certain feeling, or relaxation, a quiet mind etc. The ego can quickly adapt the meditation to these ideas so that it can feel good that it had a 'productive' meditation session. Of course, there is no such thing as a productive meditation session, you meditate for the sake of meditating.

Besides this point, thoughts can also be very context dependent. Certain thoughts and feeling will only come up when triggered by certain external events.But the content of thoughts really does not matter that much, the content is only a reflection of your state. When you are in a retracted state your thoughts will be very defensive and negative. The change of your state can change very subtly.

Months ago i realized that certain thoughts are very subtle and appear in disguise.

While observing thoughts, certain thoughts appear in disguise as a kind of "helper", to serve you. This thoughts however interrupt your session and observation. Attachment happens without beeing aware of it.

Very tricky to be aware of. At least for me.

More specific pls. What "certain" thoughts don´t come up in your meditation?

@vizual Hey,

Yep, it seems as if i can go into a retracted state throughout the day, where certain negative thoughts randomly appear that do not appear during the meditation

@Falk

Mainly negative ones which do show up randomly throughout the day. For example, maybe re-running arguments that may have been had with co-workers a few days ago which do not come to surface using "do nothing" but can surface later through the day.
