Am I doing the Socratic method correctly?

3 posts in this topic

Leo says best way to teach someone is through socratic method.

Since the socratic method is a form of questioning an idea/word/tool until you get to the truth of the matter, I'm guessing this means guiding the said person through the socratic method to help them arrive at the truth? I know my coach does this to me.

My understanding of the method is that you just keep asking a question from many different angles until you arrive at the truth. For ex:

"A triangle is a shape"

Is a circle a triangle?

"No. A triangle is a shape with 3 sides"

Is 2 sides with a curved side, a triangle?

"No, A triangle is a shape with 3 straight, sides"

Etc.

Example, helping someone that is hopeless:

Can you achieve this?

"No, I don't think I can"

Why not?

"Because I've failed in the past"

Does past failures mean future failures?

"No"

Can you achieve this?

"Possibly, and with a higher chance"

Am I doing it right?
