Hyper Normalisation.

Has anyone watched “ Hyper Normalisation “ on BBC iPlayer? It’s very interesting. But it’s just under 3 hours long, but no ads thankfully.

HyperNormalisation is a 2016 BBC documentary by filmmaker Adam Curtis that argues governments, financiers, and technocrats have built a simplified, fake version of reality over the past 40 years to mask complex global problems.

Core Thesis

The Fake World: Instead of handling complex realities like economic crashes or geopolitical conflict, politicians and institutions retreated into a managed, reassuring illusion.

The Term: Curtis borrowed the title from anthropologist Alexei Yurchak's work on the late Soviet Union, where citizens and officials knowingly maintained the pretense of a failing system until that collective fiction became accepted as normal.

Complicity: Society went along with the illusion because simplicity felt safe, leaving leadership paralyzed and unable to handle real crises.

Key Themes and Events

Trumping Reality: Traces how financial shifts in 1970s New York allowed figures like Donald Trump to leverage the city's decay, and how modern political figures use strategic confusion (such as Vladislav Surkov's political theater in Russia).

Global Chaos: Connects Cold War policies and Middle Eastern interventions to modern catastrophes, including the Syrian civil war, the migrant crisis, and the rise of suicide bombing.

The Rise of Post-Truth: Explains inexplicable modern shocks—like Brexit and Trump's election—as the moment when hidden, neglected historical forces finally pierced through the artificial bubble

I think the documentary is right up your street.

It even mentions something about The Grateful Dead somewhere in the programme. It’s a coincidence that you just happened to be the first to respond to this thread.

I think human society is steeped with the Spiritual underpinnings that refer to our core values, philosophical beliefs, and transcendent principles that support a person's worldview, actions, or an institution's framework. So that’s why I posted in spirituality forum.

Watching the documentary made me think about how some humans are like cancer cells just hell bent on destroying their host.
Such is the nature of life. I’ve heard many people say they think humans are like cancer cells. Most humans are normal cells thank God.

That’s another coincidence. In the documentary there’s a clip from Disneys “Tron” movie.

I’ve seen it; it’s interesting, same that other about publicity of the same author, but I do think there is more stability and "normalization" now than there ever was before.

If you take a slice of human history. say, from 1700 to 1900, and look at what was happening everywhere (in China, Europe, the Americas, Africa), what you see is constant chaos with pockets of order. In China for example, in 1850 a guy who said that was the son of God and the young brother of Jesus organized a rebellion where 30 million died. Extreme convulsions have been a constant. Now we have technology and nukes and things seems more "normalized", because they are absolute limits. Without them, world would be like Warhammer

The essential quality of life is proliferation. At a certain point, life evolves into systems that kill other systems to obtain energy, and that is where the party begins.

The essence of evolution is total war. There is only one law: survive or die. Anything goes in this war: speed, poison, traps, cunning, size, concealment. The sole objective is to kill so as not to die. Even so, most species go extinct; others take their place, only to be wiped out by another, more efficient system.

At some point, the symbolic mind emerges, evolving outside of genetic matter at a pace millions of times faster, and it’s game over. In the absurdly short span of 200,000 years, a geological blink of an eye, this mind becomes the one that sets the rules. Soon, it will dominate matter, biology, the laws of the cosmos, and reality itself, because it is reality itself, happening as a symbolic mind.

So a human labels and creates a concept called cancer cells and then believes itself to be that concept 🤔

I’ve always thought about that idea too. It does very much look like evolution is driven only for the sole purpose of optimum efficiency and is goal oriented to producing the most intelligent functioning species ever. Probably a species that resembles something with alien consciousness. But then I watched a video on why outer space is so quiet and devoid of contact by other life forms, it’s because they think these other life forms evolved to be so advanced that they eventually collapsed in on themselves, wiping themselves out. I see the same thing happening here on earth as evolution pushes for transhumanism and ever more complex systems of AI technology that will eventually take over the entire planet.

But yeah, nothing lasts forever, as they say, even the universe itself will disappear in either a heat death or big rip so I’ve heard. Then it’ll go all dark cold and quiet again, and maybe never respawn ever again. This universe could have been just a one off occurrence for all we know.

Yes that’s right, belief has a strong foothold upon the human mind. How is anything possible to exist without first knowing a single concept?
