The Paradox Of Narcissism

Narcissism Definition.

in its most general sense, is a personality style characterized by an excessive preoccupation with oneself and one's own needs, often at the expense of others. The term comes from the Greek myth of Narcissus, a young man who fell in love with his own reflection and was unable to love anyone else.

The definition of narcissism can be understood on a spectrum, from a common personality trait to a clinical mental health condition.

Narcissism as a Personality Trait.

- Self-Centeredness: A focus on one's own desires, needs, and feelings over those of others.

- Vanity: An excessive admiration of one's own physical appearance or abilities.

- Grandiosity: An inflated sense of self-importance and a tendency to exaggerate one's achievements and talents.

- Need for Admiration: A strong desire for praise, validation, and attention from others.

- Entitlement: A sense of deserving special treatment and expecting others to comply with their wishes without question.

- Lack of Empathy: Difficulty recognizing or identifying with the feelings and needs of others.

On Narcissism and Divine Selfhood

The comparison between narcissism and a "God-realized" state is a fascinating one, as the two can seem similar on the surface. While "narcissist" is often used as a convenient label for an enemy, this philosophical thought experiment reveals a deeper truth.

A Look at Overlapping Traits

When considering the traits of narcissism, it's surprisingly difficult to distinguish them from the qualities of a divine being:

 * Self-Centeredness: If God is all that exists, then it is, by definition, the absolute center of reality. This isn't a selfish act but an ontological fact.

 * Vanity and Grandiosity: For an all-powerful being, what appears as vanity is simply a recognition of its own perfect nature. It's impossible for God to "exaggerate" its talents or achievements, as they are infinite.

 * Lack of Empathy: Non-duality teaches detachment and neutrality. This isn't a cold lack of empathy, but rather a universal love that applies equally to a child with cancer and to Adolf Hitler. It sees all individuals as one.

The Fundamental Difference: Striving vs. Being.

This distinction is the key to understanding the difference between the two states.

 * Selfish power (narcissism) comes from striving. It is a fragile power that constantly seeks validation and external admiration to maintain itself. This is a state of lack and effort.

 * Selfless power (divine selfhood) comes from being. It is an effortless power that simply exists, with no need for validation or effort. It leads to a state of profound relaxation and peace.

Ultimately, while the surface-level traits may overlap, a narcissist’s power is born from insecurity, while a "God-realized" person's power is born from an innate and effortless state of being.

-----------  -----------  -----------  -----------  -----------

An extra insight that I find interesting is the apparent process through which the ego dissipates into selflessness. It's almost like movement towards god realisation first requires a surge in narcissistic traits and then somehow folds in on itself and converts into the genuine selfless nature. Not to say that this is how it always will happen, but it appears to be a common occurrence.

Lol great post.

You are a selfless LACK OF APPEARANCE, that CONSTRUCTS AN APPEARANCE. But that appearance can disappear and reappear and we call that change, we call it time, we call it space, we call it distance, we call distinctness, we call it other. But notice...this appearance, is a SELF. A SELF IS A CONSTRUCTION!!!

So if you want to know the TRUTH OF THE CONSTRUCTION. Just deconstruct the construction!!!! No point in playing these mind games!!! No point in creating needless complexity!!! The truth of what you are is a BLANK!!!! A selfless awareness....then that means there is NO OTHER, and everything you have ever perceived was JUST AN APPEARANCE, A MIRAGE, AN ILLUSION, IMAGINARY.

Everything that appears....appears out of a lack of appearance/void/no-thing, non-sense (can't be sensed because there is nothing to sense). That is what you are, and what arises...is made of that. So nonexistence, arises/creates existence. And thus everything is solved.

Appreciate this!

Deal with the issue now, on your terms, in your control. Or the issue will deal with you, in ways you won't appreciate, and cannot control.
