Screentime Log

18 posts in this topic

I'm trying to decrease my screentime and have a healthier relationship to things like social media and my phone.
I saw my screentime and had an existential crisis of sorts. I've been working on decreasing that so that I engage with life more instead of zoning out like a vegetable lol. But I think that having that extra degree of accountability by keeping a journal can help, so here I am.

I don't know how this will go but let's see what happens lol.

I spent 36 min on Instagram, 44 min on Tetris, and 1 hour on Hexa Sort. My iphone is saying that I spent 5 hours and 45 min on Youtube.

The later sounds REALLY alarming but I was playing a lot of music today via Youtube and I did like an hour long workout using it. I was just in the mood to move and dance around today lol. I was dancing around my apartment and I was playing music as I was driving to my friend's house to spend the 4th of July with her. The commute was like 30+ min each way.

I also watched a really long video from Dr. K about healthy vs unhealthy porn usuage which was like in total 2 hours and 24 min. I watched this at 2x speed while playing either tetris or hexa sort (1 hour 15 min roughly).

I feel like this video was a good use of my time and I think I got some insight from it. I wouldn't say this was slop lol.

So, the numbers look bad but I think my screentime wasn't the worst today. If we take out Youtube and like an hour and 15 min of games, we get 36 min on Insta and like 30 min on Tetris/Hexa Sort.

My screentime today was 5.5 hours.

Out of that 2 hours and 45 min were for Youtube, Maps was 2 hours, Instagram was 58 min, and Hexa Sort was 2 hours.

I was driving around quite a bit today. I wasn't using maps but it was just open.

I was also listening to a lot of music. I also watched a couple of videos regarding the bill that had passed. I also called a friend for 2 hours and face timed with her today. During the call and while I was watching my videos, I was playing Hexa Sort.

I wasn't on instagram at all today until this passed hour. I was just looking at memes tbh.

Thoughts on today: The time on Youtube is kind of inflated. As I'm typing this out, the amount of time I have been spending on fucking Hexa Sort is a little concerning. I think it's my manifestation of my tiny attention span where it's like when I'm watching a video or talking on the phone, I feel like I need to be doing something with my hands. It's very much giving Reddit stories with Subway Surfers in the background.

But overall, my screentime hasn't been too bad today. Something I have noticed is that my screentime is better on days when I have social stuff going on. Yesterday I was hanging out with my friend and her family for the 4th of July. Today, I went to the movies with my boyfriend and his family, and later at night, I called a different friend to talk to her about shit going on at work to spill the tea lol.

Hey @soos_mite_ah

if you don't mind my commenting here... i've had a similar issue with my screen time for years.

it got better when i took the focus off the screen time itself and onto the things i'll do instead. it sort of comes naturally when i've got other things to do or people to talk to that i spend significantly less time looking at my phone. sometimes it also helps to leave my phone in my room or at home, if i don't actually need it.

just thought this might help:)

@Judy2 You're good when it comes to commenting on here.

And I agree, it's important to have things to replace the screentime with instead of constantly thinking of the screentime and trying to cut down on it. That's what leades to sustainable habits. I notice that my screentime is better on days I have tons to do or if I'm out and about socializing with people or hanging out outside of home.

At the same time, I think I'm doing this journal temporarily to track any patterns I am noticing on my screentime and as a form of accountability. For the longest time, I didn't want to even look at my screentime because I was scared at how bad it was so I'm just trying to acknoweldge the truth and see where to go from there :)

I was sick with a stomach bug today

My iphone says I was on Youtube for 2 hours and 9 min, Hexa Sort for 1 hour and 24 min , Safari for 52 min, TikTok for 45 min, and Snapchat for 41 min

Youtube, again, most of that was music but I do remember watching a couple of news stories. I was probably also playing Hexa Sort during that time but I also think that I was playing Hexa Sort while I was in the bathroom with a stomach ache.

I was reading manga on Safari in the middle of the night.

Tiktok was kind of spread out throughout the day. I guess I watched a couple of videos here and there and it just added up.

And finally, I was just messaging someone on snapchat.

I didn't feel great about the day since I thought I was on my phone a lot due to me being sick. But as I'm writing this out, sure my screentime isn't where I want it to be, but I don't think it's the worst thing in the world.

7/7/2025

I was sick from the stomach bug so I didn't go to work. Total screentime was 4 hours and 40 min

Safari was for 1 hour and 33 min, Instagram was for 1 hour, Tiktok was for 1 hour, Hexa Sort was 31 min, and Youtube was 24 min

When it comes to Safari, I was mainly reading manga mixed in with being on this forum on the phone. I was on this forum a lot on Monday because I had nothing better to do tbh. There was like 3, 30 min peaks, one at 1 am, another at 12pm, and another at around 7pm.

I was on Instagram at like 1 am and then kind of sporadically from 1pm to 8pm. The 1 am session was 100% part of my doomscrolling because I was feeling anxious. I think the stuff later that day was just me looking at memes.

Tiktok really just peaked at like 10 pm only. I was doomscrolling the news.

Honestly, I was having an existential crisis at night and instead of ruminating, I just opted for scrolling. I don't think that's healthy lol.

7/8/2025

My total screentime was 5 hours today.

3 hours was for Tiktok and 1.5 hours was on Safari. I was on Youtube for only 30 min.

I remember today feeling kind of restless at work so I was reaching for Tiktok a lot. I find myself either graviating towards Tiktok either when I'm over or understimulated. Today, it was the understimulation of how boring work was. There was also some doomscrolling in the middle of the night for like an hour.

Safari mainly peaked at night. I was on Safari for 1 hour at like 1 am and then the rest of the day the other 30 min was kind of evenly distributed throughout the day. Gonna be honest, I was watching porn at 1 am because I couldn't sleep and I knew I shouldn't doom scroll on Tiktok.

Gonna be honest, I felt like shit today and I felt all over the place. I noticed that short form content tends to make me feel like that.

7/9/2025

Total screentime was 4 hours and 10 min

Youtube was 2 hours and 27 min, Tiktok was 45 min, Safari was 30 min , clock app was 27 min.

I was blasting music while getting ready for work , on my way back, and during work during my work from home portion of the day. Stomach was acting up and I couldn't focus for shit so the music helped me get going and also helped me wake up in the middle of the day.

Tiktok has like 2 15 min peaks and the remaining 15 min distributed around. I was on Tiktok for like 15 min right after work and 15 min right before falling asleep.

Safari had 3 10 min peaks at 7 am, 3pm, and 9 pm. I don't remember what I was doing in the morning and the afternoon but I do remember showing my boyfriend a couple of dumb videos later at night lol.

The clock app was active around 4 pm. I think I was using the timer for something, probably just as time to decompress after work instead of scrolling on Tiktok. I wasn't on my phone but I think the app was just open.

Today didn't feel that bad in terms of my screentime. I feel like my evening was mainly me hanging out with my boyfrienda and I was just busy at work otherwise. I guess if you take away Youtube and the clock app from the equation, my screentime is more around 1 hour and 15 min which feels reasonable.

Concerning vs Unconcerning Screentime

Concerning:

  • Using screens to doomscroll the news: Nothing wrong with watching the news but seeking out content to reflect your mental state with the excuse of "getting more information" when you see something concerning is counterproductive in actually processing your feelings. I get that I do this as a way to process what's going on around me, but there are healthier ways to go about doing that.
    • I think this mainly becomes a problem at night. I think that in these situations, I tend to gravitate towards TikTok because it's just feeding you content passively. Yeah.... that's not the vibe lol.
  • Using screens when you feel overstimulated: I get associating screentime as when you turn your brain off but most of the time, let's be real, it leaves you more overstimulated than when you started. Also, I don't think zoning out in front of a screen is good for the brain activity. Also, I don't think it's healthy for me to play games on my phone while watching a Youtube video. I think that contributes to my shrinking attention span lol.
    • I've been opting to meditating or taking naps with a timer. I think that has been helping my screentime, my tendency to rot, and also my overall productivity and satisfaction on a day to day basis.
  • Using screens when you feel restless: This is a form of emotional regulation. I think the restlessness for me often comes from an inability to focus. So the attention span shortening effects of social media are counter productive in the long run lol. I think using screens as a way to cope with boredom also falls under this category.
    • I think outside of work, I deal with this by working out, cooking, or just getting out of my apartment do something.
    • I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with the restlessness at work that doesn't involve scrolling.
  • Using screentime in the middle of the night: First of all, it fucks up your sleep. Second of all, I feel like I use this as a pacifier of sorts when my mind goes into a weird place in the middle of the night. I was talking to my therapist about this on how my mind can sometimes can go into this negative, self deprecating, anxiety induced space when I'm tired. And basically, she was telling me that this can happen because the night is the time when your brain processes shit from the rest of the day. And sure, they don't reflect your waking thoughts, but they can bring up residual healing you may need to do for otherwise "dealt with" situation. So instead of fighting it and forcing yourself to sleep, or scrolling, because you see these thoughts and emotions as something to fix, it's alright to just be with them because that doesn't always directly correlate with unhealthy rumination.
    • Either stay with your thoughts and feelings or write them out.

Nonconcerning:

  • Listening to music on Youtube: I didn't realize how much I used Youtube for music until I started keeping track of this lol.
  • Staying update on the news: I think this is necessary but I need to work on my boundaries in terms of identifying what is me being informed vs what is me doomscrolling.
  • Educating myself via video essays: I think this does pour into me and I get fulfillment from it. But I think I need to supplement this with reading for the sake of rehabilitating my attention span.
  • Checking Tiktok or Insta here and there: I feel like so long as I'm spending less than an hour on this dispersed throughout the day, I don't feel like shit. But if I'm using this for a long stretch of time, that's when I start feeling weird.
  • Anything with Maps or the Clock app: tbh, I don't really count it as screentime but my phone does lol.
  • The time I spend on Safari: I'm not doing anything concerning on Safari other than little google searches here and there (and sometimes reading manga and watching porn which is only like 1-2 times a week). There is also a reason why I don't think me being on my laptop is something I need to be concerned about.

Screentime: 5h 37 min

Comprised of:

  • Youtube - 2 hours 48 min
    • Mostly music with some video essays thrown in there
  • Hexa Sort - 1 hour 15 min
    • Most of it was between the hours of 9-12 and like 20 min at around 10 pm when I was talking on the phone with my boyfriend
  • Safari - 1 hour 15 min
    • I was on it from 11-12 for like 20 min and like from 4-5 for 35 min. I have no clue what I was doing from 4-5. My main memory during that time was that I was in a call with an client with a fuck ton of questions. Maybe my phone was open on Safari during that time, idk.
  • Instagram- 1 hour 05 min
    • was on it from 10 -12 for like 45 min. The remaining 20 min was kind of spread out
  • Tiktok- 1 hour 8 min
    • 40 of those minutes was from 11 to 3 pm
  • Remaining time was me messaging people and calling people

I was feeling really restless at work and I couldn't focus for shit. I was physically really sleepy for the first half of the day and for the second half, I found myself irritated with my workload. I guess I was mainly using my phone as a way to get away from my work since I'm forced to be there lol.

Honestly, really bad smut.

It's too embarrassing for me to even talk about lol

That's between me and my browsing history. :D

sob emoji

that's so fire

if you're in the mood for romance that's actually unironically good, highly recommend your eternal lies

It's my favorite manhwa of all time bar none. it's not perfect but it's the only comic to ever make me ugly cry (and i'm a heartless pig headed male) and the ending was so rewarding.

there's no outrageous seggs so you'll probably hate it though (😭😭)

@RendHeaven I appreciate the recommendation. I'll check it out.

Granted the sex in the manga I'm talking about isn't too out there or graphic. It's just cringey/ funny with a side of fuel to help me think of fake scenarios before I go to sleep lol. This manga updates with new chapters every 6 months or so and I kinda forgot about it for the last 2+ years so I'm catching up.

Like there was one chapter where this girl is dating this wealthy guy and the guy's dad doesn't approve so the dad tried to write this girl a check for however much she wanted to get her to break up with her man. And then she awkwardly runs away with her man. I was dying of laughter when that happened (and I'm laughing again while typing this) because it's word for word a K drama trope lmaooo :D.

But yeah, thanks for the recommendation. I'm 100% sure that it's better than whatever slop I'm reading now lol

Screentime: 4h 48 min

Safari - 2 hours 31 min

  • I spent like an hour and a half reading manga at night and like an hour trying to figure out my bra size.
  • Long story short, a couple weeks ago I was crashing out about being built like an airpod so I impulse bought a minimizer bra. I used some online calculator to figure out my size and it told me that I was a 30I so that's the size that I bought. Gonna be honest, it fits me better than my bras that I have but it has its own set of problems and I was crashing tf out because I spent like $50 online to get this thing and I might have to go through a trial and error process. I don't want to spend $200 on fucking bras and have to ship things back because this store doesn't have a physical location. Then, when I went on the internet to figure out the sizing and what went wrong when I measured myself, I got like 10 different possibilities and each suggestion contridicted the previous one.

Youtube - 1 hour 46 min

  • Half of it was music, other half was video essays on 2x speed. I don't think I should watch things at 2x speed just to cut down on the screentime because it leaves me feeling over stimulated. And plus, it's probably a sign that I should be watching less.

Instagram- 51 min

  • It says that I was on it from 10-11pm but that's when I was reading manga. I think I checked something on Instagram and just had the app open.

Hexa Sort- 33 min

  • I was playing this while watching Youtube videos at 2x speed. I stopped when I realized that I was acting like an ipad baby lol.

Spotify- 28 min

  • I'm surprised this isn't higher because I spent most of my work day listening to music on spotify instead on youtube. I'm not sure how the phone calculated my screentime on this.

Screentime: 3 hours 33 min

Youtube: 1 hour 8 min

  • I was playing music on my phone.
  • But I will say, I did watch an additional hour of youtube on my laptop. It was just a couple of Vaush videos

Safari: 51 min

  • I got on Actualized.org in the morning for about 30 min because my internet was down. So I opted to use the data on my phone instead.
  • I also read manga for about 30 min.

Maps: 37 min

  • I was driving around doing various errands.

Clock: 21 min

  • Had to use my timer for a few things

Tiktok: 13 min

  • 13 minutes isn't bad at all but my critique with this was that I whipped out my phone because I was having a shit day and I could feel myself wanting to escape and get some hit of dopamine lol. Long story short, I woke up not feeling so great because my anxiety was acting up from being overwhelmed with all of the stuff I needed to do that day. Then, I accidentally skipped a couple of meals and I felt mentally and physically out of it. Thankfully, my boyfriend was there and he helped me get myself to do the things I needed to do by doing them together and since he was there, I felt a little weird just being zoned out on my phone. He went to the pharmacy to get something and I waited in the car. As I waited, that's when I took Tiktok out and then I got off the phone after he came back.

Basic Goals

  1. Continue to track your screentime usage.
  2. Aim for your combined time for TikTok and Instagram to be less than an hour. This is will also limit mindless doomscrolling.
  3. Stop using social media to manage negative emotions, manage overstimulation, or manage restlessness/understimulation.
  4. Limit non music related Youtube use.  Start reading instead.
  5. Buy a dumb phone after the above is under control.

Screentime: 4 hours 17 min

Youtube:  2 hours

  • mainly music with a couple video essays in the morning.
  • But I will say, I have spent A LOT of time on Youtube today because I was watching and contemplating a lot in a couple of lengthy videos. I also journalled a fair bit today (both on this forum and privately). My phone screentime is nothing compared to my laptop screentime today. Nevetheless, I feel good about my screentime on my laptop and I feel like it was productive and fulfilling.

Instagram: 1 hour 4 min

  • I spent like 15 min on Instagram last night before going to sleep and that was after 12pm so it got logged for today. I spent about 50 min on instagram at like 7pm.

Tiktok: 27 min

  • I spent like 27 min on Tiktok last night before going to sleep after 12 pm. I didn't check Tiktok at all during the day.

Messages 25 min

  • I was sending audio messages back and forth with a friend and since that takes more time than just sending messages, the Messages app showed up towards the top of the screentime log. Most of the time it's towards the bottom since I'm only there for like a couple minutes and it's negligible.

Screentime: 5h 7 min

Youtube: 1 hour 57 min

  • Nearly all of this was music. I think I probably just watched one Vaush video on my phone.
  • But tbh, I spent like another hour listening to video essays on my laptop to deal with my work being annoying as hell. i was just trying to get through the work day.

Safari 51 min

  • This was mainly me reading manga and I think a did a few google searches here and there. I came onto this forum and replied back in a journal a couple times.

Maps: 50 min

  • Nonissue tbh

Tiktok: 29 min

  • I swear I was on here more today. But I think it more so had to do with the number of times I opened the app rather than me spacing out on it for a long period of time. According to my iphone, I spent 3 min from 12-1am on Tiktok, 5 min from 9-10am, 3 min from 10-11am, 4 min from 11-12pm, 11 min from 12-1pm, and 1 min from 2-3pm.
  • I think the reason why I was sporadically opening this app is because I have the reflex to but then the moment that I open it, I'm like *wait, I can do better and do xyz instead* or I'm like *wait, this will probably make me feel even more all over the place, let me not.* I kinda had a shitty work day and the last thing I wanted to do was focus on my job (and to be fair, I wasn't really focused) but I'm glad that I didn't opt to scrolling instead.

Instagram: 10 min

  • I spent like the last 10 min on Instagram to decompress from some things I was working on

Clock: 32 min

  • I used the timer a couple times.

Messages: 16 min

  • Just texted back some people.

I was a little shocked by my screentime being so high today considering that I felt like I was really busy with a myriad of things today. Work was annoying. Afterwards I ran some errands. Then I worked out, took a shower, made dinner, did a few things to wrap up on work, and cleaned something around my place. I think the music, maps, and reading manga comprises of most of the 5 hours so I'm not too worried about that.
