Will my LP be Redundant?

7 posts in this topic

My LP for the past 5 years has been to create animated shows/movies that deeply impact people on a spiritual and emotional level. To create worlds which are genuinely like no one has ever seen before, create my own creatures, characters and stories. The kind of style I want it to have is, an emphasis on personal growth and a lot of nuance. My eyes tear up when imagining these stories and why I’m doing this. This is something I’ve always wanted to do as a kid, and something I’ve felt nothing but passionate about. I wanna be like Miyazaki, create the way he created. I wanna make movies like Flow, if anyone has seen that. Make shows like Blue Eye Samurai or Arcane, way way later in the future when I gain enough capitol.

For the past few years I’ve been reading, learning both technical skills and art/writing/storytelling skills. So far, I’ve been very deep into the technical skills of 3D art and I know understand quite well how films/shows are made from a technical perspective, I understand computer graphics, know most of the industry standard software.

However, I’m getting doubts whether my vision for the future will even work in the real world. And thats okay, all you can do is try to adapt.

My doubts mainly come from the fact that, with the world changing so fast, wealth inequality growing and the cherry on top is blatant IP theft with the training of AI text-image generators.

Will there even be a demand for the kind of things I make? Or whether I can even get enough money to fund the making of these things. Animation is by far one of the most time/money consuming things. This shit takes years and millions, sometimes billions to make. I feel like, even if I truly become a master at my craft, learn how to make anything, make it fast, and even learn about the business side of it very well, it wont be enough.

Since AI companies are passing a law that bypasses basic copyright for the training of AI models. I’m worried that I’m gonna make something, put all my love into an animated short or a piece of IP, then some AI company is gonna feed that into their AI model and re-release a shittier more watered down version of my IP and earn more money. Like seriously, whats stopping them from doing that and getting away from that?

I’m worried that in an economy thats collapsing, rising wealth inequality, its going to be near impossible to make any sort of art because It’ll become so hard and expensive to produce. And that the internet /social media will be so oversaturated with AI slop that any marketing done for the things I make will just be drowned out in the ever-flowing and non-human megafeed. Even if I try to get investors on my side to fund my projects, I don’t want to compromise on watering down my products severely and taking out that authenticity to the point where it has little to no soul.

I’m also against using generative AI for my projects, its just not a tool made for artists. Its a crap product made to replace artists and a dirty and unsustainable business. If someone makes a generative AI tool that is actually made for artists, then I’m fine using it. But my god the current tools are absolute garbage, offers little to no creative control, and the thought of using text prompts to make visuals just feels utterly ridiculous and hilarious.

I feel as if the future holds little future for any seriously great art, as people just wont have enough money to consume it or produce it. Am I wrong for thinking this? I know this is pessimistic but I’m having serious doubts.

Obviously I’m not saying that my LP is impossible, but it damn feels near impossible. I feel as if I have to get my hands dirty and find different ways to live decently, recently I’ve been obsessed about learning economics and entrepreneurship, so if anyone has any books that really helped them, drop them below!

What are your thoughts?

You should not worry about AI companies stealing your finished movie. That won't be an issue because copyright law is strong for stuff like that and your movie will still make gopd enough money.

But you should transition to using AI tools to reduce manual labor of drawing. The days of manually drawing animation frame by frame will die off, because it's just too painful and too costly.

Invest your energy in training higher level skills like directing, art direction, storytelling, etc. Manual technical drawing is not where you should be investing your resources.

I can imagine an AI that draws interpolated frames between keyframes you give it. So you only need to draw the keyframes, making your process 10x more effecient.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah absolutely, I’m all for new tools for background things that require a lot of manual labour to make. Like crowd sims, or annoying things you gotta do like UV unwrapping or retopology, or in the context of 2D animation, animated shots that don’t matter as much in the context of the story.

I’m really hoping in the future there’ll be more investment in AI tools for artists that allow an extremely high level amount of creative control, like an actual UI for these tools rather than ridiculous paragraphs of text prompts. Someone out there should make this their LP.

I do however feel like theres power in atleast having some technical skills, like knowing how to use certain 3D softwares, so you have the freedom of actualizing your vision. Two go hand in hand, especially with 3D animation, learning it feels like a must for me.

Whatever happens, I know I gotta learn about how to protect my IP.

Your #1 priority should be how to make IP that people love.

That's not about your technical software skills nor drawing skills.

Direction, style, characters, story, emotions, psychology, vision, imagination, branding, marketing, business, communication, teamwork -- those are your real skills. Not software!

And I will ;) Don’t you worry aha, its still absolutely a primary focus despite me saying I want to learn a lot about the techy-stuff.

Thanks though

I’m just curious but do you work for yourself or for a company?
What inspired this LP in you?

I’m currently a student in my final year, planning to work for a company after this.

I think its because I had a really difficult time of my life as a kid, like struggling with depression, chronic loneliness, loss and self hatred. I really want to tell that story and how I overcame that in my own way.

Even so, without that really difficult period of my life I probably would have done the same thing.
