Initial engagements

6 posts in this topic

Is it too judgemental to form a view of a person via initial engagement?

For instance, I contacted a firm for some PC supplies the other day. They responded by saying "Hello Mr. X" or x as in my first name. It just seems forward to use a first name for a stranger.

I don't see a problem. Did you expect a "hello sir" or "hey."

It's nice to use the first name, I find it cordial.

The content of communication matters more than intent.

not to strangers. this is earnd, and yes, "hello, sir" is better.

I consider it less cordial, especially on first meeting. One can. use first names when there is more rapport.

@bebotalk This is what I noticed when making calls in English, people use your first name, no clue why. I thought it was refreshing, given how private and formal everyone is over here.
