I heard something similar about the Jim Crow south. You can see examples white people during that time being arrogant and rude. But today southerners are considered more polite and hospitable. In a society with a hierarchy, the mind splits into categories that are active at different times. In South Africa whites believed they were superior and the majority wanted to maintain apartheid, but now that it ended most say they were against it, because when it was available the part that thinks they are superior is active, but when it ends the part that thinks they aren’t comes out. Israelis are raised in a racial hierarchy and think they are racially superior to others, especially Arabs. When people are in a position to exploit others their subconscious mind convinces them to demonize the other group and believe they are superior to maintain the exploitation. But the other half of the Israelis consciousness telling them otherwise will come out as soon as it’s clear maintaining the hierarchy is unsustainable.
