Is totalitarianism in the west a possibility?

I actually think it's foolish to assume that it isn't, the question is only; how likely is it? And what are the possible influences/reasons on the development of such high-end authoritarian structures?

It's already totalitarianism of $ but it's masked as democracy and people naively believe that.
