Point of focus

6 posts in this topic

Hello,

When meditating let's say I'm meditating on my hungry belly sensations.

If then a sensation comes up like a pain type sensation in my foot or my back, if I switch focus am I still meditating?

When I'm meditating on  bodily sensations the sensations I start on become faint.

And then something else pops up.

I nust wonder if I'm meditating if I'm switching focus

Dan

@_the_litl_prince Hi & welcome!

One approach is focusing on breathing from your stomach, allowing whatever arises. Thoughts arise, about sensations. Just let them arise and see that they pass, in returning the attention to breathing from the stomach. The nature of the thoughts seems to get sneakier, trickier, enticing you to pair them with the sensations. Just let them arise and pass.

Take your attention back to the thing that you are focusing on. If your mind wonders off - bring it back. And yes it will wonder off infinite times. So bring it back! Again.... Again... Again.... AND AGAIN! A few weeks of effort should be enough to see some improvement in your focus. Also your first months of meditation will also be unconsciousness cleansing process, old thoughts will arise in your awareness, you need to purge old held secrets in your deepest core.

hi Naham ok thanks I understand that. What I find is my natural breathing is quite shallow and relaxed. I'm some kind of light easy breather. Should I make more purposeful forceful breathe to make it easier to concentrate on?

Inflow  if I'm counting whilst I'm breathing, does that still count as only focusing on one object? So what I'm saying is if I'm supposed to be focusing on my breath, but I'm counting at the same time isn't that teo things at once?

Taking big breaths and relaxing the waistline can be helpful. No “forceful” breathing is necessary. Deeper into meditation and relaxation, the breath becomes naturally more and more shallow, until it’s almost not happening. This is a blissful experience.

If the counting is working for you, it’s working for you. Otherwise, no counting, just focus on stomach breathing, and relax every muscle.
