What is pain?

What is pain metaphysically? I'm talking about "true" physical pain, and yes i know we're supposed to say its like a signal that something is going wrong within the organism like a bad tooth an instestinal obstruction inflammation etc. Is it part of maya? The fact that so many healers exists tells me that this is connected to the mystical.
