Will Younger Generations Face Right-Wing Authoritarianism for the Rest of Our Lives?

@Leo Gura

You've previously said that you don't see any solution on the horizon to America's deep structural problems, regardless of who wins elections, because these problems are too entrenched for any one political leader to fix.

Given that assessment, do you think younger Gen Xers, Millennials, Gen Z, and subsequent generations should realistically expect right-wing authoritarian populism to remain a serious threat to democracy in America and other Western countries for the rest of our lives?

One of my biggest concerns is that the underlying conditions contributing to the rise of movements like MAGA—economic inequality, concentrated corporate power, declining trust in institutions, political polarization, and widespread dissatisfaction with the political establishment—may remain unresolved for decades.

Even if Trump and MAGA eventually lose their political influence, what would prevent another right-wing authoritarian movement from emerging if those underlying conditions persist?

Progressives like Cenk Uygur have warned that unless the political and economic system undergoes meaningful structural reform, authoritarian populism could continue gaining support from people frustrated with the status quo.

This brings me to a broader historical concern.

During the Progressive Era, New Deal, Great Society, and broader Fifth Party System, Americans witnessed enormous economic and democratic reforms that fundamentally improved the country's institutions and strengthened economic security for millions of people.

However, we have now gone approximately 45 years without a similarly comprehensive progressive restructuring of our political economy.

If our structural problems are unlikely to be resolved for the foreseeable future, does that mean my generation and younger generations may never get to experience another sustained period of democratic stability and national optimism comparable to earlier reform eras?

I'm not suggesting that right-wing authoritarianism will necessarily dominate politics continuously or that democracy will inevitably collapse.

Rather, I'm concerned that we could spend the rest of our lives repeatedly having to defend democratic institutions against authoritarian movements, without ever addressing the deeper conditions that keep making those movements politically appealing.

Do you think this is a realistic long-term prognosis for Western democracy, or are there reasons to believe that the threat of right-wing authoritarianism could substantially diminish within our lifetimes?

And if you believe the threat is likely to persist, what would realistically have to change for that cycle to be broken?
