Negative description of groups

5 posts in this topic

I’ve been in that conversation. The main point consists of someone trying to explain reality, and there’s some bad guy, a villain, or other group catching strays (being negatively talked about). Talking with older people who are nostalgic about the past, reminiscing about the good old days and how the youth aren’t okay, is an example.

Being online you will encounter many explanation about groups that are responsible for the worlds problems like people with melanin and bankers.

The groups can be extremely broad. For example, you are talking with somebody going through a heartbreak, and wanting to talk. You notice that the conversation devolves into a generalisation about how bad the other sex is.

I have my own groups that I very unsubtly bad-mouth — elites who abuse their position, and racists with power. However, I don’t argue that these groups are responsible for most of what’s wrong in the world.

Let’s brainstorm strategies for countering description of reality while implicating groups unfairly.

Personally, I don’t believe in villains. Like Leo says; Survival.
I focus on conditions.

Trends are not the same thing as racism. I'm half black, my dad is fully black from Chad and so I'm a first generation immigrant. When I walk at night and a group of black dudes walk past me I feel more anxiety than if a group of woman walk past or if a group of asian men do it. Don't gaslight yourself into ignoring how reality is currently. It doesn't give you a open card to be racist and rude to people but avoiding reality is part of the reason stage green is so ineffective in the world because they use their feelings to invalidate reality. Doesn't work.

It's a nuanced topic because stereotypes are not foolproof. The other way I was walking downtown and this white french chick with a group of dudes basically like swung at me randomly to impress her friends I guess? Sometimes life is just random lol

But the good ol’ days were empirically worse on many metrics. According to many sociological studies, safety has improved a lot. Depending on which side you stand on politically, you may argue against this trend. If you or anyone else wants to enhance your safety even further by avoiding certain groups, go ahead. Still, if your premise that society is less safe is false, and you pin that trend on certain groups then that conclusion needs nuance.

You're misrepresenting my argument. I never said society is less safe. I said that gaslighting yourself that all groups are the same is not helpful in my mind. It's like the Leo blog post where he said some spiritual people and most stage green people try to invalidate the dangers of reality by using their good emotions. That works until you encounter a crocodile, or a criminal or just the competitive nature of society.

I linked it to black men because you seemed uncomfortable going there and I'm black so I thought it'd be an interesting point to bring up. My brother was telling me himself that perhaps he has some internalized racism because he thought the same thing but I don't think it's that simple. Socioeconomics are a real thing and often times black communities are driven to more crime than other communities. Not always and other communities also are involved in crime but I dislike the idea of ignoring reality to feel better superficially.

I’m Black myself.

All groups are not the same, I agree. But concluding something about reality from limited information, and spreading your worldview based on lazy and sloppy observation, has consequences when done en masse.

For example , if a guy or a girl gets cheated on, they become more susceptible to negative descriptions of the other sex. A man might join a red pill community that have some valid claims but generally very toxic. There exist tough facts about men, women , employers, landlords, black people, immigrants etc.  Most of my mind activity goes into being irritated about how certain groups gets an unfair despription.

You also find trivial generalizations, like about people who drive certain car brands, or people who drive hybrids or sports cars. The consequences of these observations are harmless, while others have more impact
