8 posts in this topic

I wanna continue on higher education in italian literature. I'm passionate about reading, writing and the italian language, therefore i think it's a perfect fit for my personality. I also want to improve myself education wise and career wise, obtaining a master's degree and a phd in italian literature. I'm very excited and grateful i get to study what i enjoy, and make a career out of it.

I would love to become a professor of italian literature in university once i obtain my phd.

i have a degree in English literature and while i did feel passionate about it during my studies, i also found that there are some limitations in the kind of social impact you can have on the world if all you do is analyse century-year-old books and write papers about fictional characters (even if these individuals reflect social and cultural trends).

what is your take on this?

if you consider the model Ikigai (you can google that briefly if you don't know what i am talking about), you could also say that some elements aren't covered with a career in literature. the value you provide for others, and maybe the dimension of whether people are willing to pay you for what you do. of course, universities are willing to pay, but what is the higher goal of your research and teaching?

i would be really curious to hear how you feel about that:)

@Judy2 Well in my mind, fiction encapsulates higher truths than physical reality. Secondly, I want write books in Italian on many topics perhaps bridging literature, philosophy, sociology, psychology... I will have a big impact on the world this way. Secondly i am so passionate and excited to get to study Italian literature, like I am so passionate about the Italian language, and its historical literature, it's so fascinating to me. And i would love to get more people interested in that aspect of life (Italian language and literature).

If we go to the ikigai model, I basically got all the areas covered: profession, mission, passion and vocation.

@Judy2 Like when you read Dante or Dostoevsky, or any excellent work of fictional literature, your life drastically changes for the better, it grows your mind and makes you contemplate reality in deeper ways than scientific textbooks could. Fictional literature is an artform, a higher dimension of reality accessed through the splendid use of mind and imagination. Fictional literature isn't only entertainment but encapsulates reality in a different flavor than what we call the "real" world.

@Judy2 Fiction is facts.
Animals don't create fiction, it's only possible due to the human evolved brain area, giving us access to a higher dimension of reality: imagination.
What about that as a nice
recontextualization?
Fiction isn't fiction, it's a higher reality than the reality we share with animals.
