How Sane Are You?

A Basic Model of Mental Coherence

Core principle: Sanity is an active process, not a static property. Entropy is the default. And at its ceiling, sanity becomes a limitation — because reality is more fluid than any fixed structure can ever fully capture.

Stage 1 — Pre-coherent

The structure is either still forming (childhood) or dissolving (breakdown/regression). Two opposite directions, same address.

Stage 2 — Baseline Coherent

The instrument holds. Internally consistent, tracks reality adequately. Passively maintained by routine and environment.

Stage 3 — High Coherence

Actively and deliberately maintained. Self-correcting. Rigorously honest.

Stage 4 — Transcendent Coherence

The instrument becomes clean enough to see through itself. Structure is held lightly rather than gripped. Reality is prior to any map of it.

How it’s lost: Remove the inputs — attention, honesty, reality testing — and the system drifts quietly toward noise.

How it’s gained: Sustained orientation toward truth. Willingness to update. Reduction of self-protective distortion. At higher stages, the convergence toward love as accurate perception of interconnection naturally follows — not as sentiment but as byproduct of seeing more clearly.

The ceiling: Even perfect sanity is still a structuring activity imposed on something fundamentally unstructured. Transcendence must occur. Transcendence isn’t abandoning the instrument; it's seeing through it while still using it.

I'm so sane I vomit instinctively when I read AI "x, not y" sentence structures.

Intrinsic joy = being x meaning ²
