Just lift heavy weights using the rule of Progressive overload with the correct technique and you will make gains ;), and preferably consume enough calories, you don't need any protein supplements (personally I believe its a con), although creatine is performance enhancing (it also temporarily adds an extra 1/2 inch to your muscles due to water retention)  which has helped me a lot, I've only had 1 tub of whey once when i was 15, never had it since and I'm 18 and I've made all kinds of gains ;)
